1 John 4 – What Spirit Are You Listening To
Study Content
This chapter opens with a clear instruction. “Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” Not everything that sounds spiritual is from God. Not every voice that speaks carries truth. There must be discernment.
And that brings a quiet but important question. What are you allowing to influence you without examining it.
Then it gives a way to discern. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. This is not just about words. It is about alignment with truth. Who Jesus is matters. How He is acknowledged matters.
And that means discernment is not based on emotion or appearance, but on truth.
Then it says that what does not align with Christ is not of God. It calls this the spirit of antichrist. Not always obvious. Not always loud. But present. Which means discernment must be active, not passive.
Then it says something that brings reassurance. “Ye are of God… and have overcome them.” Not because of personal strength, but because “greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Which shifts everything inward. The source of discernment is not just external knowledge. It is the Spirit within you.
And that invites reflection. Are you trusting that inner witness, or are you overriding it when something feels off.
Then it explains that those who are of the world speak from the world, and the world hears them. Which means what you are aligned with determines what resonates with you.
And that leads to a deeper question. What kind of voices are you naturally drawn to, and what does that reveal about what is shaping you.
Then it says, “He that knoweth God heareth us… hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” There is a distinction. Truth and error are not blended. They are separate, even if they sometimes appear close.
Then the chapter shifts, and everything centers on love. “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God.” Not just encouraged. Rooted in Him. Which means love is not something you generate on your own. It flows from Him.
And it says that everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Which means love is evidence of origin. It reveals where something comes from.
Then it says something that cannot be overlooked. “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” Not that God shows love. He is love. It is His nature.
And that raises a quiet question. Is what is flowing from you aligned with His nature.
Then it shows what that love looks like. Not that we loved Him first, but that He loved us and sent His Son. Which means love is initiated by God, not earned by you.
And that changes the foundation. You are not trying to earn His love. You are responding to what has already been given.
Then it says, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. Which means what you have received is meant to flow through you.
And that leads to reflection. Is what you have received from God being expressed toward others, or is it being held back.
Then it says that no man has seen God at any time, but if we love one another, God dwells in us. Which means His presence becomes visible through love. Not seen directly, but revealed through how you live.
Then it brings assurance again. We know that we dwell in Him because He has given us of His Spirit. Again, the inner witness. The confirmation within.
Then it says that whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him. And then it repeats it. “God is love.” And he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God.
Which means abiding in God and abiding in love are not separate things. They are the same.
Then it says something that brings everything into peace. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.” Not manages it. Casts it out.
Which means fear and love cannot fully occupy the same space. One will push out the other.
And that raises a quiet but honest question. Where fear is present in your life, is there a place where love has not yet been fully received.
Then it says fear has torment. It keeps something unsettled, unresolved. But love brings rest. Not because everything is perfect, but because you are secure.
Then it says, “We love him, because he first loved us.” Which brings it back to the beginning. Everything starts with Him.
And then it brings it into something very real. If someone says they love God but hates their brother, something is not aligned. Because love for God cannot be separated from how you treat others.
And that leads to a final reflection. What spirit are you listening to, and what is it producing in you.
Is it producing fear or peace. Division or love. Confusion or clarity.
Because this chapter is not just about identifying truth. It is about living from it.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for placing Your Spirit within me, that I may discern what is from You and what is not. Help me to not receive everything without testing it, but to walk in truth and clarity.
Teach me to recognize Your voice and to trust the witness of Your Spirit within me.
Let Your love be fully formed in me, casting out every place of fear, doubt, or uncertainty.
Show me where I may be holding back love, and help me to reflect Your nature in how I live and respond to others.
Let my life be grounded in truth and filled with Your love.
Amen
