Ezekiel 10 opens with Ezekiel looking and seeing above the firmament over the heads of the cherubim what appears like a sapphire throne. This immediately reconnects the vision to the earlier revelation of God’s sovereign authority, showing that everything unfolding proceeds from the throne above rather than from earthly circumstances alone. The sapphire appearance communicates majesty, purity, and heavenly authority.

God speaks to the man clothed in linen and commands him to go in between the wheels beneath the cherubim and fill his hands with coals of fire from among the cherubim, scattering them over the city. This reveals judgment proceeding directly from the presence of God. The fire symbolizes purification, destruction, and divine judgment, showing that Jerusalem’s coming devastation is tied to the holiness of God responding to corruption.

The man clothed in linen entering before Ezekiel’s eyes reveals open execution of God’s command. Nothing is hidden or uncertain about what is unfolding. The cherubim stand on the right side of the house, and the cloud fills the inner court, revealing the continued presence of divine glory within the temple area, though already in movement.

The glory of the Lord rises from the cherub and moves to the threshold of the house, while the house is filled with the cloud and the court full of the brightness of the Lord’s glory. This movement is significant because it reveals gradual departure rather than sudden abandonment. God’s glory is withdrawing step by step because of the people’s corruption. The brightness still fills the space, showing that His glory remains overwhelming even in departure.

The sound of the cherubim’s wings is heard even to the outer court, like the voice of Almighty God when He speaks. This reveals power, authority, and overwhelming presence. The movement of heaven is not silent or insignificant. It carries the weight of divine majesty.

When the command is given to take fire from between the wheels and among the cherubim, one cherub stretches forth his hand and takes fire from among them, placing it into the hands of the man clothed in linen. This cooperation reveals perfect order within heavenly activity. The cherubim act in complete obedience to God’s command, showing unity between divine authority and heavenly execution.

Ezekiel notices the appearance of a man’s hand under the wings of the cherubim, again emphasizing both action and capability. This reveals that heavenly beings function with purpose and precision under God’s direction.

The prophet then observes the wheels beside the cherubim, each wheel sparkling like a beryl stone. Their appearance is described as one wheel within another, allowing movement in every direction without turning. This reveals unrestricted operation under divine authority. God’s purposes move perfectly without confusion or adjustment.

The rims of the wheels are full of eyes round about, revealing complete awareness and perception. Nothing escapes God’s sight. His governance is neither partial nor blind. The repeated emphasis on eyes communicates divine omniscience operating within all movement and judgment.

The wheels are called “wheel” in Ezekiel’s hearing, emphasizing their identity and function within the vision. Each cherub has four faces: the face of a cherub, a man, a lion, and an eagle. These faces again reveal fullness of created life, authority, strength, intelligence, service, and swiftness operating under God’s throne.

Ezekiel recognizes these as the same living creatures he saw by the river Chebar, revealing continuity in the vision. This is important because it confirms that the same sovereign glory revealed in exile is now connected directly to the judgment upon Jerusalem. God’s authority is not confined to the temple, the land, or one location. He reigns everywhere.

The movement of the cherubim and wheels together reveals complete unity. Wherever the spirit moves, the wheels and creatures move together. This shows that heavenly activity proceeds according to one Spirit and one purpose without division or conflict.

The cherubim lift up from the earth, and the wheels rise beside them. The glory of the Lord departs from the threshold of the house and stands over the cherubim. This marks a major turning point in the vision. The glory that once filled the temple is now moving outward. The departure reveals that persistent corruption has created separation between the people and the manifest presence of God.

The cherubim then lift their wings and rise from the earth before Ezekiel’s eyes, with the wheels beside them, standing at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house. The glory of the God of Israel is above them. This movement toward the east gate reveals continued progression away from the temple itself.

Ezekiel again identifies the living creatures as the cherubim he saw beneath the God of Israel by the river Chebar. The repetition reinforces certainty and recognition, showing that the prophet fully understands the connection between the visions.

The detailed descriptions throughout the chapter emphasize order, awareness, holiness, movement, and authority. Nothing in the vision is random. Every movement of the cherubim, wheels, fire, and glory operates under divine sovereignty.

The chapter ultimately reveals that God’s holiness cannot remain joined to persistent corruption and idolatry. It shows that judgment proceeds from His throne with precision and authority, and that His glory gradually withdraws from what has become defiled. Yet even in departure, His sovereignty remains absolute. It establishes that God sees all things, governs all movement, and acts with complete awareness and purpose. The vision also reveals that God is not confined to earthly structures, because His glory reigns beyond location, temple, or nation, ruling over all creation from His heavenly throne.

This chapter invites you to examine whether there are areas in your life where compromise has slowly created distance between you and God’s presence. It calls you to consider how seriously you regard His holiness and whether you recognize that outward forms cannot replace inward alignment.
