Joshua 23 Remembrance, Warning, and Remaining Faithful

Study Content

Joshua 23 takes place in the later years of Joshua’s life, after the Lord has given Israel rest from their enemies. Joshua is now old, and he gathers the leaders of Israel to speak to them one final time. This moment is not about new instruction, but about reinforcing what has already been established. It is a call to remember, to remain faithful, and to understand the consequences of turning away.

Joshua begins by reminding them of what the Lord has done. He points out that it is the Lord who has fought for them and driven out the nations before them. Their victories were not the result of their own strength or strategy, but of God’s intervention. This reminder is important because it establishes the foundation for everything that follows. If God is the source of their success, then their continued well-being depends on remaining aligned with Him.

He then encourages them to be very courageous in keeping and doing all that is written in the book of the law of Moses. This instruction echoes what was given earlier, showing that obedience remains central throughout every stage of their journey. Courage is not only required in battle, but also in maintaining faithfulness. It takes strength to remain aligned with God when other influences are present.

Joshua warns them not to associate with the nations that remain among them. He instructs them not to make mention of the names of their gods, nor to serve or bow down to them. This is a call to separation. The presence of other nations and their practices creates the potential for distraction and compromise. Joshua makes it clear that maintaining distinction is necessary for continued alignment with God.

He reminds them to cleave unto the Lord, just as they have done up to that point. This word “cleave” implies a close and intentional attachment. It is not a casual connection, but a deliberate and sustained relationship. Joshua acknowledges that they have done this, but he emphasizes the need to continue.

Joshua then points to the evidence of God’s faithfulness. He states that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord their God spoke concerning them. Every promise has been fulfilled. This declaration reinforces the reliability of God’s word. What He has spoken has come to pass without exception.

However, Joshua also presents a warning. Just as every good thing has been fulfilled, so will the warnings be carried out if they turn away from the Lord. If they begin to associate with the remaining nations and adopt their practices, it will lead to consequences. Those nations will become snares and traps, causing difficulty and ultimately leading to their removal from the land.

This balance between promise and warning reveals the seriousness of their position. The same faithfulness that brought blessing will also uphold the consequences of disobedience. God’s word is consistent in both directions. What He has spoken will stand, whether it is promise or warning.

Joshua concludes by reminding them that he is about to go the way of all the earth. His time is coming to an end, but the responsibility remains with them. They must carry forward what has been established. The continuation of what God has begun now rests in their willingness to remain faithful.

From a deeper perspective, Joshua 23 reveals that remembrance of God’s faithfulness strengthens continued obedience, that courage is required to maintain alignment, and that both promise and warning are certain. The chapter shows clearly that what has been established must be upheld through ongoing faithfulness.

This chapter reads the reader by asking whether there is a consistent commitment to God’s word, whether there is awareness of influences that could lead away from Him, and whether there is a willingness to remain steadfast even after experiencing blessing. It brings into focus that faithfulness is not a one-time decision, but a continual posture.

Reflection

Am I remaining faithful to God in every season, or have I become complacent after experiencing His blessings. Are there influences in my life that could lead me away from Him if I am not careful.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and for the way You have fulfilled every promise You have spoken. Help me to remain steadfast in following You and to not become distracted or influenced by anything that would lead me away.

Give me the courage to continue in obedience and the wisdom to recognize what does not align with You. Let my life reflect a constant commitment to Your word and a deep connection to Your presence. In Jesus name, Amen.
