Revelation 5 – Who Is Worthy to Open What Is Sealed
Study Content
This chapter begins with something placed directly in the center of the throne. A book, written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. Complete. Closed. Not partially hidden, but fully sealed.
Which means what is about to be revealed is already written, already established, but not yet opened.
And that raises a quiet question. How often do you try to understand what is not yet opened, instead of trusting that it is already known by Him.
Then a strong angel proclaims with a loud voice, asking, “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” Not who is willing. Not who is curious. Who is worthy.
And then something happens that feels heavy. No one in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book. No one.
Which reveals something important. This is not something that can be accessed by position, by knowledge, or by effort. Worthiness is required, and none were found.
And John begins to weep. Not casually. Deeply. Because what is sealed remains sealed if no one can open it.
And that leads to a deeper reflection. Have you ever felt the weight of something being closed, something beyond your ability to access or understand.
Then one of the elders speaks. “Weep not.” Which immediately shifts the atmosphere. The absence of worthiness is not the final answer.
And then comes the declaration. “Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda… hath prevailed.” Not will prevail. Hath prevailed. The victory is already accomplished.
Which means the ability to open what is sealed is not future. It is already secured.
And that raises a powerful question. Are you waiting for something to be resolved that has already been completed in Him.
Then John looks, expecting to see a Lion, but what he sees is a Lamb. As it had been slain.
Which reveals something profound. The victory of the Lion is expressed through the sacrifice of the Lamb.
Power did not come through force. It came through surrender.
And that invites reflection. Do you recognize that what looks like weakness in God’s way is actually where true authority is established.
Then it says the Lamb stands in the midst of the throne. Not distant. Not separate. Central.
Which means everything revolves around Him.
And the Lamb takes the book. No hesitation. No resistance. Because He is worthy.
And the moment He takes it, everything responds.
The living creatures and the elders fall down before Him. Worship shifts from anticipation to recognition. What was awaited is now seen.
And they have harps and golden vials full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. Which means your prayers are not lost. They are held. They are present before Him.
And that raises a quiet but comforting question. Do you realize that what you have spoken to God is still before Him.
Then they sing a new song. “Thou art worthy… for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood.” Worthiness is tied to what He has done. Redemption is the foundation.
And it says He has made us kings and priests, and we shall reign. Again, identity connected to what He has accomplished.
Then the scene expands. Thousands upon thousands, voices multiplying, all declaring the same thing. “Worthy is the Lamb.”
Not divided. Not distracted. Focused.
And they speak of what belongs to Him. Power. Riches. Wisdom. Strength. Honor. Glory. Blessing. All returning to Him.
And then every creature joins in. In heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea. Everything.
Which means there is nothing outside of this recognition. Everything ultimately acknowledges Him.
And then it settles again. The living creatures say, “Amen.” And the elders fall down and worship.
And that brings everything into a final reflection. What is sealed in your understanding, what feels closed or beyond you, is not waiting on your ability to open it.
It is already in the hands of the One who is worthy.
And the question is not whether it will be opened.
The question is whether you are looking at the Lamb.
Because when you see Him clearly, everything else begins to make sense.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for showing me that what is hidden is not beyond You.
Help me to trust that what I cannot open, You already hold.
Turn my focus away from striving to understand everything, and bring my attention back to Jesus, the One who is worthy.
Remind me that His victory is already established, and that I can rest in what He has done.
Let my heart respond in worship, recognizing that everything belongs to Him.
Worthy is the Lamb.
Amen
