When Fear Tries to Steal Your Peace
Scripture
John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Devotion
Fear and peace cannot rule the heart at the same time.
When fear moves in, peace often feels like it disappears. Your thoughts become unsettled. Your emotions feel unstable. Even simple decisions can suddenly feel overwhelming.
But Jesus spoke directly into this struggle.
He did not promise that life would never bring trouble. What He promised was something deeper. He promised His peace.
The peace Jesus offers is not the fragile kind that depends on everything going right. It is a steady peace that remains even when circumstances are uncertain.
Fear tries to convince you that peace is impossible until your problems are solved. Jesus reminds you that peace is possible because He is present.
You do not have to wait for life to become perfect before your heart can rest.
God’s peace is not something you manufacture. It is something you receive.
When you turn your attention back to Him, fear begins to lose its grip and peace begins to return.
Reflection
What situation has been disturbing your peace recently? How might your heart respond differently if you focused on receiving God’s peace instead of trying to control the outcome?
Extended Insight
The peace Jesus described is different from the peace the world offers.
The world’s version of peace depends on favorable circumstances. When everything is going well, people feel calm. But the moment difficulty appears, that peace disappears.
God’s peace works differently. It is rooted in relationship with Him, not in the absence of problems.
This is why believers throughout history have been able to remain steady even during challenging times. Their peace was not based on what was happening around them but on the presence of God within them.
Fear tries to convince us that we are vulnerable and alone. But when we remember that Christ Himself gives us peace, our hearts begin to settle again.
God’s peace is stronger than the fears that try to disturb your heart.
Prayer
Father, when fear tries to steal my peace, remind me of the peace that Jesus has given. Help me turn my attention away from the worries that disturb my heart and back toward Your presence. Fill me with the calm confidence that comes from trusting You. Amen.
