When Your Lamp Is Still Burning

Scripture
“Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning.” Luke 12:35 KJV

Devotion

Jesus used the image of a burning lamp to describe the life of someone who is ready.

In a world without electricity, a lamp was essential for light in the darkness. But a lamp would not continue burning on its own. It required oil. It required attention. If it was neglected, the flame would slowly fade until the light disappeared.

Jesus said that the lives of His followers should be like lamps that are still burning.

This picture describes a faith that continues to stay alive. It is the life that keeps walking with God even during long seasons of waiting. It is the heart that continues to pray, continues to seek Him, and continues to trust Him even when life feels ordinary.

The lamp stays burning because the relationship remains active.

There may be times when the flame feels small, but it has not gone out. The oil of devotion, prayer, and obedience continues to feed the light.

When the Bridegroom returns, the lamps that are still burning will reveal the hearts that stayed close to Him.

The goal is not a perfect flame.

The goal is a living one.

Reflection

Is the lamp of your faith still burning today?

What helps keep your spiritual life alive and connected to God?

Extended Insight

In Luke 12, Jesus called His followers to remain ready for His return. The instruction to keep their lights burning symbolized spiritual alertness and devotion.

A burning lamp reflected a life that remained attentive to God. It was the opposite of spiritual neglect or drifting. Just as oil must be replenished in a physical lamp, the spiritual life grows through continual connection with God.

Prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience all help sustain the flame.

The believer whose lamp is still burning is the one whose heart continues to stay near to Christ.

Prayer

Father, help the lamp of my faith continue to burn.

Teach me to remain close to You through prayer, Your Word, and daily obedience. Guard my heart from drifting and help my relationship with You remain alive.

May my life be ready when Christ returns.

Amen.
