Revelation 18 – What Are You Still Connected To
Study Content
This chapter opens with another angel coming down from heaven, having great power, and the earth is lightened with his glory. There is illumination here, not partial, not dim. What is about to be revealed is not hidden. It is made visible.
And he cries mightily, declaring that Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen. The repetition is not accidental. It emphasizes certainty. What once appeared stable, powerful, and established has collapsed.
And that raises a quiet question. Are there things in your life that appear strong and secure, but are not built on what can truly last.
Then it describes Babylon as becoming the habitation of devils, the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. What once appeared attractive is now revealed for what it truly is.
Which shows that exposure changes perception. What is seen clearly is no longer desirable.
And that invites reflection. Is there anything in your life that you would see differently if it were fully brought into the light.
Then it says that all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants have grown rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
This is not just about influence. It is about participation. Connection. Benefit.
Which means this system is not distant. It involves those who are connected to it, who have gained from it, who have been shaped by it.
And that leads to a deeper question. Are there things you are connected to, not because they are right, but because they are beneficial.
Then comes the call that must not be overlooked. “Come out of her, my people.”
This is not a suggestion. It is an invitation with urgency.
And it continues, “that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”
Which reveals something important. Remaining connected carries consequence. Separation is not about distance alone. It is about alignment.
And that invites a very personal reflection. What are you still connected to that God is asking you to come out of.
Then it says her sins have reached unto heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. The word reached carries the sense of accumulation, of something building over time until it can no longer be ignored.
Which means this is not sudden judgment. It is the result of continued alignment with what is not right.
Then it says to reward her even as she rewarded others, to give double according to her works. Again, there is a principle of return, of what has been done coming back.
And then it describes her posture. “I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.”
This is self-confidence rooted in illusion. It is the belief that what has been built cannot fall.
And that raises a quiet but searching question. Is there any place where you have placed confidence in something that is not rooted in God.
Then it says her plagues will come in one day, death, mourning, and famine, and she shall be utterly burned with fire.
The suddenness is striking. What took time to build can fall quickly when it is not established in truth.
Then the kings of the earth mourn, the merchants weep, those who benefited grieve the loss. Not because of righteousness, but because of what they have lost.
Which reveals something important. Attachment determines response.
And that leads to a deeper reflection. When something is removed, when something falls away, is your response rooted in loss, or in clarity.
Then it lists the merchandise, gold, silver, precious stones, fine linen, and continues through a long description, ending with “the souls of men.”
Which reveals the depth of the system. It is not just about things. It reaches into lives, into identity, into what is most valuable.
And then it says that the fruits that the soul lusted after are departed, and all things which were dainty and goodly are gone.
What once satisfied no longer exists.
And that raises a quiet question. What are you relying on for satisfaction that cannot last.
Then a mighty angel takes a stone like a great millstone and casts it into the sea, saying that Babylon will be thrown down and found no more at all.
No more music. No more crafts. No more light. No more voice.
Everything that once defined it is gone.
Which shows that what is not built on truth does not continue.
Then it says, “for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.” The word sorceries comes from the Greek pharmakeia, which carries the sense of manipulation, of altering perception, of influencing through means that distort reality.
Which means this system did not just exist. It influenced how people saw, how they thought, how they responded.
And in her was found the blood of prophets, saints, and all that were slain upon the earth.
Which reveals the depth of opposition. This was not neutral. It stood against what was true.
And that brings everything into a final reflection. This chapter is not just about a city or a system. It is about connection, influence, and separation.
What you are connected to.
What is shaping your thinking.
What you are benefiting from.
And what God is asking you to step away from.
Because the call is clear.
Come out.
Not out of fear.
But out of alignment.
Because what is not built on truth will not remain.
And what you remain connected to will shape what you experience when it falls.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for revealing what is true and what is not.
Search my heart and show me anything I am still connected to that is not aligned with You.
Give me the courage to step away from what is not right, even if it has been familiar or beneficial.
Help me to find my security, my identity, and my satisfaction in You alone.
Clear my vision so that I see things as they truly are.
Lead me into alignment, into truth, and into what will remain.
Amen
