Romans 5: Peace With God Through Christ

Study Content

Romans chapter 5 marks an important shift in Paul’s teaching. After explaining how a person is justified by faith in chapters 3 and 4, Paul now begins to describe what that justification means for the believer’s life.

He begins with a profound statement. Because believers are justified by faith, they now have peace with God through Jesus Christ. This peace is not simply a feeling of calm but a restored relationship with God. Before salvation humanity stood separated from God because of sin. Through Christ that separation has been removed.

Paul then explains that believers also have access into grace. The word access carries the idea of being welcomed into the presence of a king. Through Christ, believers are brought into a new standing where they live within the grace of God. Instead of fear and condemnation, they now stand in a place of acceptance and hope.

Paul also introduces an unexpected idea. Believers can rejoice even in tribulation. This does not mean suffering itself is enjoyable, but it reveals that suffering can produce something meaningful within the believer. Tribulation produces perseverance, perseverance develops character, and character strengthens hope.

This hope is not fragile or uncertain because it is rooted in the love of God. Paul explains that the love of God is poured into the hearts of believers through the Holy Spirit. This inner assurance strengthens faith and reminds believers that God is actively present in their lives.

Paul then turns to the foundation of this hope. Christ died for humanity while they were still sinners. This reveals the depth of God’s love. Salvation was not given because humanity had first become righteous. Instead, Christ died while people were still separated from God.

The second half of the chapter introduces one of the most significant comparisons in Scripture. Paul contrasts Adam and Christ. Through Adam, sin entered the world and death spread to all humanity. Adam’s disobedience brought condemnation.

Through Christ, however, a new reality emerges. Christ’s obedience brings justification and life. Where sin once ruled, grace now reigns. The work of Christ reverses the effects of Adam’s fall and opens the way for humanity to experience reconciliation with God.

Romans chapter 5 reveals that justification by faith is not simply a legal declaration. It brings a new relationship with God, a new standing in grace, and a new hope that carries believers through every circumstance.

Prayer
Father, thank You for the peace that comes through Jesus Christ. Thank You for bringing me into Your grace and restoring my relationship with You. Help me remember that even difficult seasons can strengthen my faith and produce hope. Let my life remain anchored in the love You have poured into my heart through Your Spirit. Amen.
