Exodus 34 The Name He Proclaimed

Study Content

Exodus 34 is restoration grounded in revelation.

The people failed.

The covenant was broken.

Yet God calls Moses back up the mountain.

New tablets.

The law is rewritten.

But before instruction is emphasized again, God reveals Himself.

He proclaims His own name.

“The Lord, the Lord.”

This repetition carries weight.

Identity before expectation.

God defines Himself.

Merciful.

Gracious.

Slow to anger.

Abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

Notice the order.

Mercy precedes judgment.

Grace precedes correction.

But He does not erase justice.

He forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin.

Three words for rebellion.

Yet He will by no means clear the guilty.

Compassion and justice coexist.

Exodus 34 prevents us from creating a God in our own preference.

He is not sentimental.

He is not harsh.

He is covenantally faithful.

This declaration becomes foundational throughout the Old Testament. The prophets will echo this language repeatedly. It becomes Israel’s theological anchor.

After idolatry, God does not redefine Himself.

He reaffirms who He has always been.

Then something visible happens.

Moses descends and does not know that his face shines.

Exposure to God alters appearance.

Presence leaves residue.

But Moses veils his face.

There is both glory and limitation.

Paul later tells us in Corinthians that in Christ the veil is removed.

Exodus 34 is not merely historical.

It is revelatory.

Restoration does not begin with human resolve.

It begins with divine character.

Reflection

How do I describe God in my own heart?

Have I emphasized mercy and ignored justice, or emphasized justice and ignored mercy?

Do I allow Scripture to define who He is, or do I reshape Him to fit comfort?

What evidence in my life shows I have been in His presence?

Father,
Thank You for revealing who You are.
Root my understanding of You in truth, not preference.
Let Your mercy soften me and Your justice steady me.
Renew what has been fractured in my obedience.
Keep me anchored in Your steadfast love.
Let Your presence leave its mark on my life.
Amen.
