Paul begins the chapter by instructing believers to be subject to rulers and authorities.
The Greek word hypotassō means to place oneself under authority.
Paul is encouraging believers to live responsibly within society so that the gospel is not discredited.
Believers are also called to be ready for every good work.
This phrase emphasizes that faith should produce visible action.
Paul then describes the attitude believers should have toward others.
They are not to speak evil of anyone.
The Greek word blasphēmeō refers to slander or malicious speech.
Instead believers should be gentle and show humility toward all people.
The word prautēs refers to meekness or controlled strength.
This attitude reflects the character of Christ.
Paul then reminds believers of their past condition.
Before encountering God’s grace, they too were foolish and disobedient.
They were deceived and enslaved by various desires and pleasures.
The Greek word planē refers to wandering or being misled.
Sin distorts a person’s understanding and direction.
Paul describes life before salvation as filled with envy and hatred.
These attitudes reflect the broken relationships that result from sin.
However, Paul then introduces one of the most beautiful turning points in the New Testament.
“But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared.”
The Greek word chrēstotēs refers to kindness or moral goodness.
The word philanthrōpia literally means love for humanity.
God’s love for people moved Him to act.
Paul explains that salvation does not come through human righteousness.
It comes through God’s mercy.
The Greek word eleos refers to compassion shown to someone in need.
Mercy recognizes human inability and responds with grace.
Paul then describes the process of salvation.
It comes through the washing of regeneration.
The Greek word palingenesia refers to rebirth or new beginning.
This word was sometimes used to describe renewal after destruction.
In spiritual terms, it refers to the new life given through Christ.
Paul also speaks of the renewing of the Holy Spirit.
The word anakainōsis refers to transformation or renewal.
Salvation is not merely forgiveness.
It involves inner transformation through the Spirit of God.
Paul says the Holy Spirit was poured out abundantly through Jesus Christ.
This reflects the generosity of God’s grace.
Through this work believers are justified by grace.
The word dikaioō refers to being declared righteous.
This justification leads believers to become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Paul emphasizes that this message is trustworthy.
He encourages Titus to affirm these truths confidently.
The goal is that believers devote themselves to good works.
The word proistēmi refers to leading or committing oneself to something.
Good works are not the basis of salvation.
They are the result of salvation.
Paul then warns against foolish controversies and arguments about the law.
These discussions often produce division without spiritual growth.
The word mataios refers to something empty or useless.
Paul instructs Titus to warn divisive individuals.
If they continue to cause division after repeated warnings, they should be avoided.
Such individuals have turned away from truth and become self condemned.
Paul concludes the letter with personal instructions and greetings.
He encourages Titus to help fellow workers and continue supporting those engaged in ministry.
Paul ends by repeating a central theme.
Believers must learn to devote themselves to good works so that their lives are fruitful.
