A Heart That Feels What God Feels
Scripture
“That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.” Romans 9:2–3 (KJV)
Devotion
At the beginning of Romans 9, Paul reveals something deeply personal about his heart. He carries a profound sorrow for the people who have not yet recognized the truth of Christ. His grief is not rooted in anger or frustration, but in love. Paul understands what it means to encounter the transforming power of God, and because of that, he longs for others to experience the same life-changing grace. This kind of compassion reflects the heart of God Himself. God does not look at humanity with indifference. He sees the struggles, the confusion, and the distance that separates people from the life He desires for them. When believers grow closer to God, they often begin to feel a similar compassion for others. Instead of responding with judgment, their hearts begin to carry a deeper desire for people to encounter truth, healing, and restoration.
Reflection
When you think about people who do not yet know God or who are struggling in their faith, what emotions rise within you?
Extended Insight
Spiritual maturity often changes how we view others. Early in faith, it can be easy to focus primarily on personal growth and understanding. But as our relationship with God deepens, our perspective expands. We begin to notice the spiritual needs around us more clearly. Compassion replaces criticism, and concern replaces indifference. This does not mean we carry the responsibility of changing someone’s life ourselves. Transformation belongs to God. But our hearts can reflect His desire for others to encounter truth. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pray for others with sincerity and allow our lives to demonstrate the peace and hope that come from walking with God.
Prayer
Father, help my heart reflect Your compassion for others. When I see people who are struggling or searching for truth, give me a spirit of love rather than judgment. Teach me to pray for others with sincerity and to carry the same desire You have for people to experience Your grace. Use my life as a quiet reflection of the hope and peace that come from walking with You. Amen.
