Do Not Drift into Spiritual Sleep

Scripture
“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” 1 Thessalonians 5:6 KJV

Devotion

Spiritual sleep rarely happens suddenly.

It usually begins quietly.

A heart that was once attentive to God slowly becomes distracted. Prayer becomes less frequent. Time in Scripture becomes occasional. The awareness of God that once shaped daily life begins to fade into the background.

This is how drifting begins.

No one intends for it to happen. Life simply becomes busy. Responsibilities grow heavier. Worries about work, family, and the future fill the mind. Little by little, the heart becomes less watchful.

Paul warned believers about this very thing.

“Let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” He was not talking about physical sleep. He was describing a spiritual condition where people lose awareness of God and the eternal reality that surrounds them.

Spiritual wakefulness means living with attention.

It means remembering that your life belongs to God. It means keeping your heart sensitive to His voice and your mind focused on what truly matters.

The danger is not always open rebellion.

Sometimes the danger is quiet drifting.

But the heart that continues to turn toward God does not drift far. It stays awake, aware, and ready for the day when Christ returns.

Reflection

Are there areas of your life where spiritual drifting has slowly begun?

What steps might help you refocus your heart and remain spiritually awake?

Extended Insight

In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul spoke about the coming “day of the Lord.” He reminded believers that while the world may live unaware of that day, followers of Christ are called to live with spiritual alertness.

The contrast Paul describes is between sleep and watchfulness.

Those who are spiritually asleep live without awareness of God’s purposes. Those who remain watchful live with clarity, self control, and devotion.

Remaining spiritually awake does not require constant anxiety. Instead, it involves maintaining a steady relationship with God that keeps the heart attentive and responsive.

The life that walks closely with God does not drift into spiritual sleep.

Prayer

Father, guard my heart from drifting away from You.

Help me remain spiritually awake and attentive to Your presence. Renew my desire to seek You through prayer, through Your Word, and through obedience.

Keep my heart watchful as I wait for the return of Christ.

Amen.
