Found When You Felt Lost

Scripture
Luke 15:4 (KJV)
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

Devotion

There are seasons in life when you can feel completely out of place. You might feel disconnected from people, unsure of your direction, or like you somehow ended up far from where you were supposed to be. When that happens it is easy to believe that you are simply lost in the crowd of life and that no one is really looking for you. But Jesus tells a story that reveals the opposite. A shepherd with one hundred sheep notices when even one goes missing. He does not shrug and move on with the ninety nine that remain. He leaves them and goes searching until the lost one is found. This story shows how God sees people who feel lost or disconnected. You are not just a number in the crowd. When you feel like you have wandered far away, God does not write you off. He moves toward you. Belonging with God means that even when you feel far from where you should be, you are still someone worth seeking.

Reflection

Have there been moments when I felt spiritually or emotionally lost? What does it mean to realize that God actively searches for the one who feels disconnected?

Extended Insight

The parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15 was told in response to religious leaders who questioned why Jesus spent time with people who were considered outsiders. Instead of defending Himself with an argument, Jesus explained the heart of God through a story. A shepherd’s responsibility was to protect and care for the flock, but Jesus emphasized something deeper. The shepherd notices when one sheep is missing and considers that one worth searching for. In ancient shepherding culture, a sheep separated from the flock was vulnerable and unable to survive alone for long. The shepherd’s search reflects persistence and care. Jesus uses this image to show that God does not see people as expendable. Even when someone feels disconnected, distant, or spiritually lost, God’s response is not abandonment. It is pursuit. Belonging in God’s kingdom means that your absence matters to Him.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being the God who seeks those who feel lost. When I feel disconnected or unsure of where I belong, remind me that You have not forgotten me. Help me trust that You are guiding my steps and drawing me closer to where I need to be. Let my heart rest in the truth that I matter to You. Amen.
