God’s Love Does Not Change with Your Performance
Scripture
“The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” Jeremiah 31:3 KJV
Devotion
Human love often feels conditional.
People reward success and withdraw when someone fails. Approval can rise and fall depending on behavior, achievement, or expectations. Because this pattern is so common, many people assume that God must operate the same way.
They believe His love grows stronger when they do well and weaker when they struggle.
But God’s love does not work that way.
Jeremiah records the Lord declaring that He has loved His people with an everlasting love. Everlasting means it does not change with circumstances, performance, or seasons. It is rooted in the character of God Himself.
This truth is important because performance can easily become the foundation of a person’s spiritual life. When someone believes God loves them more on their best days and less on their worst days, their relationship with Him becomes unstable.
They feel close when they succeed and distant when they fail.
But the love of God remains steady.
Your obedience matters because it reflects trust and relationship with Him, but it does not create His love. That love existed before your success and continues even when you struggle.
God’s love is not a reward for perfection.
It is the foundation from which transformation begins.
Reflection
Have you ever felt that God loved you more when you were doing well spiritually and less when you struggled?
How might your faith change if you believed that God’s love for you remains steady in every season?
Extended Insight
Jeremiah 31 was written during a time when Israel had repeatedly failed in their relationship with God. Despite their history of disobedience, God declared that His love for them was everlasting.
This statement reveals something profound about the nature of divine love. Unlike human affection, which can fluctuate with behavior, God’s love is rooted in His unchanging character.
This does not remove the importance of obedience. Instead, it places obedience in its proper place. Believers do not obey God in order to earn His love. They obey because they are already loved.
Understanding this truth allows faith to grow from a place of security rather than fear.
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me with an everlasting love.
Help me release the belief that I must earn Your love through performance. Teach me to rest in the truth that Your love remains steady even when I struggle.
Let my obedience grow out of gratitude and trust rather than fear or pressure.
Thank You for drawing me closer with Your lovingkindness.
Amen.
