God Is Not Against You

Scripture
“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 KJV

Devotion

Many people quietly live with the feeling that God is against them.

When life becomes difficult, it can feel as though God is working against their happiness, their plans, or their peace. Some begin to believe that every hardship is proof that God is disappointed in them or that they have somehow fallen out of His favor.

But Scripture tells a completely different story.

Paul asks a powerful question in Romans 8. If God is for us, who can truly stand against us? This is not just a comforting statement. It is a declaration about the heart of God toward His people.

God is not your opponent.

He is not standing at a distance waiting for you to fail. He is not searching for reasons to withdraw His care from your life. Instead, God is actively working for your good, guiding your life with wisdom and love.

Even when circumstances feel difficult, God’s posture toward you remains the same.

For you.

He works within your story to shape your character, strengthen your faith, and draw you closer to Him. What may feel like resistance is often God’s quiet work of transformation, preparing your heart for something greater.

The cross itself proves this truth.

If God were against humanity, He would not have sent His Son. The sacrifice of Christ reveals the depth of God’s commitment to restore and redeem His people.

God is not against you.

He is the One who stands with you, works for you, and calls you forward.

Reflection

Have you ever interpreted a difficult season as a sign that God was against you?

How does Romans 8:31 challenge that belief about God’s heart toward you?

Extended Insight

Romans 8 is one of the most powerful chapters in Scripture describing the security believers have in God. Paul builds a case that God’s love and purpose cannot be overturned by circumstances, suffering, or opposition.

The phrase “If God be for us” is not hypothetical doubt. It is a confident declaration rooted in the work of Christ. God demonstrated His commitment to humanity through the sacrifice of Jesus, proving that His intentions toward His people are rooted in redemption rather than rejection.

This truth invites believers to reinterpret their struggles. Instead of seeing difficulty as evidence that God has abandoned them, they can trust that God continues to work within every season of life.

Prayer

Father, there have been moments when I wondered if You were working against me.

Forgive me for believing that lie. Your Word reminds me that You are for me, not against me. Thank You for loving me, guiding me, and working within my life even when I cannot see what You are doing.

Help me trust Your heart in every season. When life feels uncertain, remind me that You are still with me and still working for my good.

Amen.
