God Is Not Standing Against You

Scripture
“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 KJV

Devotion

There are moments when life becomes so difficult that a quiet question rises in the heart. If we are not careful, that question can slowly turn into a troubling belief. When prayers feel unanswered and circumstances remain heavy, people sometimes begin to wonder if God Himself is standing against them.

This thought often grows silently. It is not always spoken out loud, but it lingers beneath the surface of the heart. A person may continue to believe in God while quietly feeling that heaven must somehow be working against them.

Romans 8 speaks directly into that fear.

“If God be for us, who can be against us?”

This statement is not a motivational slogan. It is a declaration grounded in the work of Christ. Earlier in the same chapter we are reminded that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. The cross settled the question of whether God stands for us or against us.

The cross revealed the answer forever.

God did not move toward humanity with rejection. He moved toward humanity with redemption. When Jesus gave His life, He demonstrated that God’s heart is not turned against His people. It is turned toward them.

This does not mean life will never include difficulty. Scripture never promises that believers will avoid hardship. But it does promise that the hardships we face are not evidence that God has become our enemy.

God is not standing against you.

He is standing with you.

Reflection

Have you ever faced a season where circumstances made you feel as though God was distant or working against you?

How might your perspective shift if you remembered that God’s posture toward you is one of support rather than opposition?

Extended Insight

Romans 8 is one of the most powerful chapters in the New Testament because it reshapes how believers understand their relationship with God. The chapter moves from the removal of condemnation to the assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

The question “If God be for us, who can be against us?” highlights the ultimate security believers have in Christ. The phrase does not suggest that opposition will never exist. Instead, it emphasizes that no opposition can ultimately overcome those who belong to God.

Throughout Scripture we see examples of this truth. Joseph faced betrayal and imprisonment, yet God was with him. Daniel stood before hostile rulers, yet God protected him. The early church endured persecution, yet the gospel continued to spread.

The presence of difficulty does not mean God has turned against His people. In many cases it is within those very moments that His strength becomes most visible.

The cross remains the clearest evidence of where God stands. A God who gives His Son for humanity is not a God who stands against those who belong to Him.

Prayer

Father, there are times when life becomes heavy and I struggle to understand what You are doing. In those moments it can be easy to believe that You are distant or that You might somehow be working against me.

Today I bring those thoughts before You and surrender them to the truth of Your Word. Your Word says that if You are for me, no one can stand against me.

Thank You for the cross that proves Your love and commitment toward me. Thank You that Your heart is not turned away from me but toward me.

Help me trust Your presence even when circumstances are difficult. Remind me that You are standing with me, strengthening me, and guiding me through every season.

I choose today to believe that You are for me.

Amen.
