God Never Closed the Door
Scripture
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”Revelation 3:20 KJV
Devotion
There are times when people quietly believe that their opportunity with God has passed. Life may have taken unexpected turns. Faith may have grown quiet for a season. Mistakes may have created distance that feels difficult to overcome.
In those moments it can seem as though the door between the heart and God has been shut.
Yet Scripture reveals something very different.
Jesus describes Himself as the one who stands at the door and knocks. He does not describe a door that has been permanently locked from His side. Instead, He reveals a God who patiently waits for the moment when the heart is ready to respond.
This image changes the way we think about distance from God.
The door was never closed by Him.
Even when people wander, struggle, or grow distracted by life, God continues to invite relationship. His presence does not disappear simply because someone has lost their way for a season.
The invitation remains.
The moment a person turns and opens the door again, they discover that God was already standing there, ready to enter with grace and fellowship.
Reflection
Have you ever felt as though the door between you and God had closed?
What changes when you realize that God has continued to stand at the door waiting for you?
Extended Insight
The words in Revelation 3:20 were originally spoken to the church in Laodicea, a community that had grown spiritually distant and indifferent. Rather than abandoning them, Christ extended an invitation.
He stood at the door and knocked.
This image reveals something important about God’s character. Even when people grow complacent, distracted, or spiritually cold, God continues to pursue relationship. His patience reflects His desire for restoration rather than rejection.
The gospel repeatedly shows a God who seeks, calls, and invites.
Understanding this truth removes one of the enemy’s most common lies. The enemy often tells people that they have missed their chance or that the door is permanently closed.
But the invitation of Christ remains open for anyone willing to respond.
Prayer
Father, there have been moments when I felt distant from You and wondered if the door between us had closed. My own struggles and distractions sometimes made it feel that way.
Thank You for reminding me that You never closed the door. Your Word shows that You stand patiently and invite me back into fellowship with You.
Help me respond to Your invitation with an open heart. Let my life remain close to Your presence, and remind me that Your grace continues to welcome me.
Today I open the door again and welcome Your presence.
Amen.
