He Calls You What You Are Becoming
Scripture
“As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations, before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Romans 4:17 KJV
Devotion
God often speaks to people in a way that surprises them. He does not always address them according to their present circumstances. Instead, He speaks according to the future He is forming within them.
Abraham experienced this when God called him the father of many nations. At the time the promise was spoken, Abraham did not yet have the son through whom that promise would unfold. From a human perspective, the title seemed premature. The evidence had not appeared.
Yet God spoke as though the promise were already reality.
Romans 4 reveals why. God is the One who gives life to the dead and calls those things which are not as though they were. His perspective is not limited to the present moment. He sees the unfolding of His purposes long before they become visible to human eyes.
This means that when God speaks identity over His people, He is not merely describing who they are today. He is declaring the work He intends to accomplish in them.
Sometimes believers struggle to accept the names God speaks over them. They look at their current weaknesses and feel unqualified for what God is saying. Yet God’s calling is not based on human readiness. It is based on divine intention.
He calls you according to who you are becoming.
Reflection
Are there ways God has spoken to your heart about who you are or what He is shaping in your life?
What might it look like to trust His vision for your life even before you fully see the evidence?
Extended Insight
Romans 4 connects the faith of Abraham with the nature of God’s creative power. The same God who brought life into existence through His word continues to shape lives through the promises He speaks.
Throughout Scripture, God’s words often precede visible change. When He declared light at the beginning of creation, darkness still filled the earth. When He called Abram to become Abraham, the fulfillment of the promise had not yet appeared.
God’s word carries creative authority.
For believers, this truth encourages patience and trust. Spiritual transformation is often a process that unfolds over time. God may speak purpose, calling, or identity long before the full picture becomes clear.
The important question is not whether the evidence is visible yet. The question is whether the heart is willing to trust the One who spoke.
Prayer
Father, sometimes I struggle to see myself the way You see me. I look at my present circumstances and feel uncertain about the future You are forming in my life.
Yet Your Word reminds me that You call those things which are not as though they were. You see beyond the present moment and speak according to the work You are doing within me.
Help me trust Your voice more than my doubts. When I feel uncertain, remind me that You are shaping my life according to Your purpose.
Give me faith to walk forward in the identity You have spoken over me, even when the full picture has not yet appeared.
Thank You for the patient and powerful work You are doing in my life.
Amen.
