Looking Back and Seeing God

Scripture
“And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.” Exodus 33:19 KJV

Devotion

Sometimes we do not see what God is doing while we are walking through a season.

In the middle of the struggle everything feels uncertain. Questions rise in the mind and the heart wonders how things will ever make sense. The path feels unclear, and it can seem like God is silent or distant.

But something interesting often happens with time.

When we look back, we begin to see God in places where we did not recognize Him before.

Moments that once felt confusing start to reveal meaning. Doors that closed begin to make sense. Even painful seasons sometimes show evidence that God was guiding, protecting, or shaping something deeper within us.

While Moses was on the mountain, he asked to see God’s glory. The Lord explained something powerful. Moses could not see everything in front of him the way he desired, but God allowed him to see where He had passed.

In other words, sometimes God is most clearly recognized after we have walked through the season.

Faith does not always see the full picture while it is unfolding. But when we look back, we often discover that God’s goodness was present all along.

He was guiding steps we did not fully understand.

He was protecting us from things we could not see.

He was shaping our hearts through experiences that felt confusing at the time.

Looking back often reveals what faith was trusting all along.

God was there.

Reflection

Can you look back on a season of your life and now see God’s hand in ways you did not notice at the time?

What might it look like to trust that God is working in your current situation even if you cannot yet see the full picture?

Extended Insight

The encounter between Moses and God in Exodus 33 contains a powerful image. Moses desired to see the fullness of God’s glory, but the Lord explained that no one could see His face and live. Instead, God allowed Moses to see His goodness as He passed by.

This moment reveals an important spiritual principle.

Often we understand God’s work more clearly in hindsight than in the present moment. The human perspective is limited, while God’s view spans the entire story.

Scripture repeatedly shows that God’s plans unfold across time. Joseph did not understand his suffering until years later. The disciples did not fully grasp the meaning of the cross until after the resurrection.

Looking back becomes a way of recognizing how God has quietly been guiding the story all along.

Prayer

Father, help me trust that You are working even when I cannot see the full picture.

When I look back on my life, thank You for the ways Your goodness has been present in places I did not recognize at the time. Strengthen my faith to trust You in the seasons that are still unfolding.

Help me walk forward with confidence that You are guiding every step.

Amen.
