Mercy Is Not Earned
Scripture
“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” Romans 9:15–16 (KJV)
Devotion
Many people live with the quiet belief that they must earn God’s favor. They try to perform well, behave correctly, and maintain a certain level of spiritual effort in hopes that God will approve of them. But Romans 9 reminds us that mercy does not come from human striving. It flows from the heart of God. Mercy is not a reward for perfect behavior; it is a gift given by a compassionate God who chooses to extend grace. When we understand this truth, it frees us from the exhausting cycle of trying to prove ourselves worthy. Instead of living under pressure to perform, we begin living in gratitude for a mercy that was never earned in the first place.
Reflection
Do you sometimes feel as though you must prove yourself worthy of God’s acceptance?
Extended Insight
The human tendency is to measure worth through effort. In many areas of life, rewards come from hard work and achievement. But the relationship God offers through Christ operates differently. Grace interrupts the normal system of earning and replaces it with undeserved kindness. This does not mean our actions no longer matter, but it means they flow from gratitude rather than obligation. When we realize that God’s mercy was given freely, our motivation for obedience changes. Instead of striving to gain His approval, we begin responding to the love we have already received.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the mercy You have shown me. Help me release the pressure of trying to earn what You have already given through grace. Teach me to live in gratitude for Your compassion and to let my actions reflect a heart that has been changed by Your kindness. Remind me that Your mercy is a gift, not something I must prove myself worthy to receive. Amen.
