Seen by God
Scripture
Genesis 16:13 (KJV)
And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
Devotion
One of the hardest feelings to carry is the feeling of being invisible. You might show up for people, work hard, try to do the right things, and still feel like no one truly notices you. In a world where attention often equals value, it can begin to feel like if no one sees you then maybe you do not matter. But Scripture tells a different story. The first person in the Bible to name God is not a king, prophet, or leader. It is a woman named Hagar who had been pushed aside and forgotten by the people around her. Alone in the wilderness, she encountered God, and she called Him “Thou God seest me.” In that moment she realized something powerful. Even when people overlook you, God does not. Even when others fail to recognize your presence, God’s eyes are already on you. Belonging begins with being seen, and before anyone else notices you, God already does.
Reflection
Have there been moments recently where I felt invisible or overlooked? What would it change in my thinking if I truly believed that God sees every part of my life?
Extended Insight
The story of Hagar in Genesis 16 reveals a profound truth about the nature of God. Hagar was a servant who had been used, mistreated, and then driven away. She found herself alone in the wilderness with no protection, no status, and no clear future. In human terms she had been pushed completely outside of belonging. Yet it was in that place of isolation that God appeared to her. She responded by naming God El Roi, which means the God who sees me. This is significant because it reveals that God’s attention is not limited to people with influence or status. His eyes rest on those who feel forgotten, displaced, or unseen. In a culture that measures worth by visibility and recognition, the story of Hagar reminds us that belonging with God begins long before human recognition appears. Being seen by God means your life is not overlooked and your story is not ignored. His attention is personal and intentional.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being the God who sees me. When I feel overlooked or invisible, remind my heart that Your eyes are already on my life. Help me rest in the truth that I am not forgotten and that my story matters to You. Teach me to find my sense of belonging first in Your presence rather than in the approval of people. Let Your awareness of my life bring peace to my heart. Amen.
