The Day No One Expects

Scripture
“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” Matthew 24:36 KJV

Devotion

Jesus spoke clearly about His return.

Many people throughout history have tried to predict the exact time it will happen. They study signs, create timelines, and search for clues that might reveal the moment Christ will return.

But Jesus made something very clear.

No one knows the day.

Not the crowds. Not the teachers. Not even the angels in heaven. The exact timing of Christ’s return belongs to the Father alone.

That truth changes how believers are meant to live.

If the day cannot be predicted, then readiness cannot be postponed. It cannot be scheduled for later. It cannot be something we plan to think about someday when life slows down.

Readiness must become a way of life.

Jesus compared His return to a moment that arrives unexpectedly. People will be living their normal lives, going through their routines, thinking about ordinary things. Then suddenly the day arrives.

For those who are watching and walking with God, that day will not be frightening.

It will be the moment they have been waiting for.

The question is not whether anyone can predict the day. The question is whether the heart is living ready today.

Reflection

If Christ returned today, would your heart feel ready to meet Him?

What does living ready for His return look like in your life right now?

Extended Insight

Matthew 24 records Jesus teaching His disciples about the end of the age and His second coming. While He described signs and events that would occur, He also emphasized that the exact timing would remain unknown.

This teaching protects believers from becoming overly focused on predictions. Instead, it calls them to focus on faithfulness and readiness.

The early church lived with this awareness. They expected Christ to return and allowed that expectation to shape how they lived, loved others, and remained devoted to God.

Living with readiness means maintaining a heart that stays close to God, faithful in obedience, and attentive to His voice.

Prayer

Father, help me live with a heart that is ready for the return of Christ.

Guard me from becoming distracted or spiritually asleep. Teach me to walk with You faithfully each day, remembering that this life is preparing me for eternity.

Help me live today in a way that honors You.

Amen.
