The Lamp That Still Has Oil

Scripture
“Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.” Matthew 25:1–4 KJV

Devotion

Jesus told a parable about ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom.

All ten had lamps. All ten were waiting. All ten appeared ready at first glance. But there was one difference that separated the wise from the foolish.

The oil.

When the bridegroom delayed, time passed and the lamps began to run low. The foolish virgins had lamps, but they had not prepared extra oil. When the moment finally came and the cry went out that the bridegroom had arrived, their lamps were going out.

The wise, however, had oil prepared.

This parable reveals an important truth about spiritual readiness. It is possible to look ready on the outside while lacking the inner life that sustains faith over time.

The oil represents the living relationship with God that cannot be borrowed from someone else. It is the personal walk with Him that grows in prayer, obedience, and daily fellowship.

No one can supply that for you.

Not a church service. Not another person’s faith. Not a religious routine.

When Christ returns, what will matter most is not how things looked outwardly. What will matter is whether the lamp of your life still carries oil.

The lamp that still has oil is the life that has stayed close to God.

Reflection

Is your relationship with God something that is personally alive, or something that only exists around other people’s faith?

What practices help keep the oil in your lamp full?

Extended Insight

The parable in Matthew 25 follows Jesus’ teaching about watchfulness in Matthew 24. It illustrates the difference between outward appearance and inward preparation.

All ten virgins expected the bridegroom. Yet only five prepared for the delay. Their extra oil represented spiritual readiness that continues even when time passes and circumstances grow uncertain.

This parable reminds believers that spiritual life must be personal. Faith cannot be transferred or borrowed. Each person must cultivate their own relationship with God.

When the bridegroom arrives, the wise are ready because their lamps are still burning.

Prayer

Father, help me keep the lamp of my life filled with oil.

Teach me to remain close to You in prayer, obedience, and daily fellowship. Guard my heart from relying on outward appearances instead of a real relationship with You.

Help my life remain ready for the day when Christ returns.

Amen.
