The Love That Chases You Down

Scripture
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Psalm 23:6 KJV

Devotion

Many people believe that when they drift away from God, they must find their way back alone.

They imagine God standing at a distance, waiting to see whether they will return on their own. Because of this, when people struggle or wander spiritually, they sometimes assume they have gone too far.

But Scripture reveals something remarkable about the love of God.

David wrote that goodness and mercy would follow him all the days of his life. The word follow carries the sense of pursuing or chasing after. It describes a love that does not easily let go.

God’s love does not simply sit and wait.

It pursues.

When a heart begins to drift, God gently calls it back. When someone feels lost or distant, God often places reminders of His presence along the path. Through Scripture, through quiet conviction, through unexpected moments of grace, God continues reaching toward His people.

This pursuit is not forceful or harsh.

It is patient.

God’s love moves toward the human heart again and again, reminding us that we are never outside His reach. Even when someone tries to run from Him, God’s goodness and mercy remain close behind.

The love of God does not easily give up.

It keeps calling, keeps inviting, and keeps pursuing the heart.

Reflection

Have you ever experienced a moment when God seemed to gently draw you back toward Him?

What does it mean to you that God’s love continues to pursue you throughout your life?

Extended Insight

Psalm 23 describes the relationship between God and His people using the imagery of a shepherd caring for his sheep. The final verse reveals that God’s goodness and mercy actively follow the believer throughout life.

This pursuit reflects the nature of God’s covenant love. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly seeks those who have wandered. From Adam hiding in the garden to the parable of the lost sheep, the biblical story reveals a God who moves toward the lost rather than abandoning them.

Understanding this changes how believers see their relationship with God. Instead of fearing that distance from God means the end of the story, they can trust that His love continues to pursue them.

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me with a love that pursues me.

Even when I struggle or drift, Your goodness and mercy continue to follow my life. Help me recognize the ways You are calling me closer.

Draw my heart toward You and help me walk in the relationship You have offered.

Thank You for never giving up on me.

Amen.
