The Potter’s Hands

Scripture
“Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?” Romans 9:21 (KJV)

Devotion

Life often places us in seasons where we feel stretched, reshaped, or even broken apart by circumstances we did not expect. In those moments it can feel uncomfortable, even confusing, as though pieces of our lives are being rearranged without our permission. Romans 9 gives us a powerful image to understand these experiences: the potter and the clay. A potter works patiently with the clay, shaping it with intention. The process may involve pressure, spinning, and constant adjustments, but every movement is purposeful. In the same way, God is continually shaping the lives of those who belong to Him. The seasons that feel like disruption may actually be moments where God is refining something deeper within you. What feels like change may be the careful hands of the Potter forming something stronger and more beautiful than before.

Reflection

Are there areas of your life where you feel as though God may be reshaping or redirecting you?

Extended Insight

The clay does not always understand the purpose of the potter’s hands while the work is taking place. The shaping process often feels uncertain from the clay’s perspective. Yet the potter sees the finished vessel long before it is complete. God works in a similar way. His shaping may involve growth, correction, new opportunities, or unexpected challenges that stretch our faith. Each moment of shaping becomes part of the larger design He is forming in our lives. Trusting the Potter means believing that every movement of His hands carries intention and care, even when the process feels uncomfortable.

Prayer

Father, help me trust Your hands as You shape my life. When seasons of change or pressure come, remind me that You are the Potter and that Your work in me is purposeful. Give me patience during the process and faith to believe that You are forming something good within me. Teach me to remain willing and responsive as You continue shaping my life according to Your design. Amen.
