The Thing You Keep Avoiding

Scripture
“And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.”1 Samuel 15:22 KJV

Devotion

There are moments in life when we sense exactly what God is asking of us. The direction may not be complicated. It may involve forgiveness, honesty, humility, or a step of obedience we have been postponing.

Yet instead of responding, we sometimes move our attention somewhere else.

We stay busy. We focus on other responsibilities. We convince ourselves that the moment is not right or that we need more clarity before acting. Over time the thing God placed on our heart quietly becomes the thing we keep avoiding.

King Saul once found himself in a similar place. God had given him clear instruction, but Saul chose to adjust the command according to his own reasoning. When confronted, Saul tried to justify his actions with religious explanations.

Samuel responded with words that still speak powerfully today. God does not desire sacrifice more than obedience.

This truth reveals something important about the life of faith. God is not primarily looking for activity. He is looking for a heart that responds when He speaks.

Sometimes the greatest step of spiritual growth is simply facing the thing we have been avoiding.

Reflection

Is there something in your life that you sense God has already asked you to address?

What might change if you chose to face that step with trust instead of delay?

Extended Insight

The story in 1 Samuel 15 reveals the danger of partial obedience. Saul believed that modifying God’s command would still honor God. Yet Samuel’s response shows that obedience is not about outward appearance or religious effort.

It is about alignment with the voice of God.

Partial obedience often disguises itself as good intention. A person may continue doing many good things while quietly avoiding the one thing God has placed before them.

True obedience, however, grows from a heart that trusts God’s wisdom more than personal reasoning.

When believers respond to God’s direction with humility, they experience the deeper transformation that obedience produces.

Prayer

Father, You know the areas of my life where I sometimes hesitate to obey. There are moments when I delay or avoid the things I sense You are asking me to do.

Give me the courage to face those places honestly. Help me trust that Your direction is always leading me toward what is good.

Teach me to respond to Your voice with humility and obedience. Let my life reflect a heart that listens and follows.

Today I choose to trust You enough to take the step I have been avoiding.

Amen.
