The Waiting That Strengthens Faith
Scripture
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 KJV
Devotion
Waiting is one of the most difficult parts of the spiritual life.
Most people do not struggle with believing that God can do something. The struggle often comes in the space between the promise and the fulfillment. It is in that quiet stretch of time where prayers seem unanswered and circumstances appear unchanged.
Waiting can feel like nothing is happening.
But Scripture shows us something deeper. Waiting on the Lord is not wasted time. It is the place where strength is quietly formed.
Faith grows differently than we expect. It does not grow when everything is immediate and easy. It grows when we continue trusting God even when we cannot yet see the outcome.
The prophet Isaiah describes waiting as a place where God renews strength. The word renew carries the idea of exchange. As we wait on the Lord, our weakness is exchanged for His strength.
This kind of waiting reshapes the heart.
It teaches patience where there once was anxiety. It teaches trust where there once was control. It teaches surrender where there once was fear.
What feels like delay is often God building a deeper faith within you.
The waiting is not empty.
God is strengthening your soul in ways that will carry you farther than you realize.
Reflection
Is there something in your life that you are currently waiting for God to move in?
How might your perspective change if you saw this waiting as a place where your faith is being strengthened?
Extended Insight
Throughout Scripture, waiting appears repeatedly as a spiritual discipline rather than a passive experience. The Hebrew idea behind waiting on the Lord carries the meaning of hopeful expectation and trust.
It is not resignation.
It is the steady confidence that God is faithful even when the timeline is unknown.
Many of the people God used most powerfully experienced seasons of waiting. Joseph waited through years of hardship before stepping into leadership. David waited long before the promise of kingship became reality. Even the disciples waited in Jerusalem before the Holy Spirit was poured out.
Waiting often becomes the place where faith becomes rooted deeply enough to sustain the next season.
Prayer
Father, help me trust You in the waiting.
When my heart grows impatient or discouraged, remind me that You are strengthening my faith in ways I cannot yet see. Teach me to wait with expectation rather than fear.
Renew my strength as I place my hope in You.
Amen.
