When Fear Feels Stronger Than Faith

Scripture
Mark 4:40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Devotion

There are moments when fear feels stronger than your faith.

You pray, but the situation still feels heavy. You remind yourself to trust God, but the worry keeps trying to creep back in. It can make you wonder if your faith is weaker than it should be.

Even the disciples experienced this.

One night they were crossing the sea with Jesus when a violent storm began to shake their boat. Waves crashed in, the wind roared, and the disciples were convinced they were about to drown. Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep.

Terrified, they woke Him and asked why He didn’t seem concerned about what was happening. Jesus calmed the storm and then asked them a question that still speaks to us today: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

His question was not meant to shame them. It was meant to remind them of something they had forgotten in the middle of the storm: He was in the boat with them.

Fear often grows when we forget who is with us.

The presence of Jesus did not mean the storm never came. It meant the storm would never have the final word.

Faith grows when we remember that no matter what we face, God is still present.

Reflection

Is there a situation in your life that feels like a storm right now? How might your perspective change if you remembered that God is present with you in the middle of it?

Extended Insight

Storms in life often reveal what our hearts are resting on.

When circumstances suddenly become unstable, our first reaction shows what we are relying on most. The disciples relied on their own understanding of the sea, and when the storm exceeded their experience, fear took over.

But Jesus was never alarmed by the storm because He knew something they had not yet fully understood: the situation was still under God’s authority.

Many fears grow when we assume that difficult circumstances mean God has lost control. Yet Scripture consistently reminds us that God’s presence remains steady even when our environment is not.

Faith matures as we learn to look beyond the waves and remember the One who commands them.

Your storm may feel powerful, but it is not more powerful than the God who walks with you through it.

Prayer

Father, when fear rises in my heart and my faith feels small, remind me that You are still present with me. Help me trust that You are greater than the storms I face. Strengthen my faith and teach me to rest in Your presence even when circumstances feel uncertain. Amen.
