When the Master Returns

Scripture
“Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.” Luke 12:37 KJV

Devotion

Jesus often spoke about the moment when the master returns. In His parables, the master would leave for a time, and the servants were entrusted with responsibility while he was gone. They did not know the exact moment he would return, but they knew that one day he would walk back through the door. The heart of the story was never about predicting the time. It was about the condition of the servants when the master arrived. Were they faithful, or had they grown careless? Were they still watching, or had they fallen into spiritual sleep? Christ used these images to help His followers understand something deeply important. One day He will return. No one knows the hour, but the promise is certain. The blessing Jesus described was not reserved for perfect people. It was for servants who remained awake, watchful, and faithful. A ready life is not frantic or fearful. It is steady. It is a life that continues to walk with God, continues to obey His voice, and continues to live with the awareness that the Master could return at any time.

Reflection

If Christ returned today, what would He find your heart focused on? What small step could help you live today with greater readiness and faithfulness?

Extended Insight

Luke 12 contains several teachings from Jesus about readiness. The imagery of servants waiting for their master to return emphasizes watchfulness and faithfulness rather than speculation about dates or times. Jesus described a remarkable reward for servants who remain faithful. He said the master himself would serve them. This image reflects the character of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve. The teaching reminds believers that readiness is demonstrated through faithful living, spiritual attentiveness, and a heart that remains close to God while waiting for His return.

Prayer

Father, help me live with a heart that is ready. Guard me from becoming distracted or spiritually asleep. Teach me to walk with You faithfully each day so that whenever Christ returns, my life will be found watching, trusting, and serving You. Amen.
