When Your Past Keeps Coming Back
Scripture
Isaiah 43:18–19 (KJV)
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?
Devotion
There are times when the past refuses to stay in the past. Old memories, old mistakes, or old labels can suddenly return and start speaking into your present. You may begin to wonder if the things that happened before will always define who you are now. The mind can replay moments you wish had gone differently, and those memories can start to feel like they are shaping your future. But this passage reveals something important about how God works in a person’s life. God speaks about doing a new thing. That means the past is not the final chapter of your story. While your experiences may have shaped parts of your journey, they do not control what God can build next. Growth often begins when you allow God to lead you forward instead of continually looking back at what cannot be changed.
Reflection
Is there something from my past that still influences how I see myself today? What might it look like for me to believe that God can still do something new in my life?
Extended Insight
Isaiah 43 was spoken during a time when the people of Israel were remembering past deliverance while also facing new challenges and uncertainties. God reminded them not to become so focused on what had already happened that they missed what He was about to do. The phrase “a new thing” emphasizes God’s ability to create fresh beginnings even after seasons of hardship or failure. Throughout Scripture, many individuals carried complicated pasts, yet their stories did not end there. God consistently demonstrated the power to restore, redirect, and transform lives. This teaching encourages a forward-looking faith. While reflection on the past can provide wisdom, remaining trapped in past identity can limit growth. The biblical message repeatedly points toward renewal and transformation through God’s ongoing work in a person’s life.
Prayer
Father, there are moments when memories from my past try to define how I see myself. Help me remember that my story is not finished and that You are able to do new things in my life. Give me the courage to release what cannot be changed and the faith to move forward into what You are creating next. Amen.
