Where Do You Run When Life Hurts
Scripture
“The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.” Psalm 9:9 KJV
Devotion
When life wounds the heart, everyone runs somewhere.
Some run toward distraction. Some run toward isolation. Some bury their pain beneath busyness, entertainment, or constant noise. Others run toward control, trying to manage every detail of life so that the hurt never touches them again.
Pain has a way of revealing our reflexes.
Psalm 9 reminds us that God Himself is meant to be the place where wounded hearts run. The psalmist describes the Lord as a refuge for the oppressed and a refuge in times of trouble. A refuge is not simply a comforting thought. It is a place of protection when the storm is real and the heart feels overwhelmed.
Yet many people hesitate to run toward God when life hurts. They assume that they must first become strong, composed, or spiritually mature before they approach Him. They believe that weakness is something to hide rather than something to bring before the Lord.
But Scripture consistently reveals a different truth. God does not turn away from the hurting. He welcomes them.
The refuge of God is not reserved for those who have everything together. It is open to those who are weary, wounded, and searching for somewhere safe to rest their soul.
Reflection
When you experience pain or disappointment, where does your heart instinctively run?
What would it look like to bring that place of hurt honestly before God today?
Extended Insight
Throughout the Psalms, God is repeatedly described as a refuge. This word carries the image of shelter during danger, a place where someone can retreat when they are vulnerable.
The psalmists were not strangers to suffering. Many of the prayers recorded in Scripture were written in moments of distress, betrayal, or fear. Yet instead of hiding their pain, they brought it directly into the presence of God.
This pattern teaches believers something important about spiritual life. God does not expect His people to approach Him only with polished prayers or perfect faith. He invites honesty.
Running to God with pain is not weakness. It is trust.
When the heart learns to bring its wounds into the presence of God, healing begins to unfold in ways that human strength alone could never accomplish.
Prayer
Father, when life hurts, I confess that I sometimes run in the wrong direction. I try to manage my pain alone, distract myself, or pretend that everything is fine.
But today I choose to run toward You. Your Word says that You are a refuge in times of trouble. You are the place where my heart can find safety and rest.
I bring my wounds, my disappointments, and my fears into Your presence. Thank You for welcoming me even when I feel weak or overwhelmed.
Teach me to trust You as my refuge. Let Your presence become the place where my soul finds comfort, strength, and healing.
I run to You today.
Amen.
