Yesterday Is Not Your Ending

Scripture
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”Philippians 3:13–14 KJV

Devotion

Yesterday has a way of lingering in the mind. Memories of mistakes, missed opportunities, and painful moments can quietly shape the way a person sees their future. The heart may begin to believe that what happened yesterday has already determined what will happen tomorrow.

But Scripture tells a different story.

The apostle Paul understood what it meant to carry a past. Before encountering Christ, Paul had lived a life that included persecuting believers. Yet when he spoke about the future, he did not allow the past to define his direction.

Instead, he chose to forget what was behind and reach forward toward what God had placed ahead.

This does not mean the past disappears or that lessons from yesterday are ignored. It means the past no longer holds the authority to decide how the story ends.

God calls His people forward.

The future God is leading you into is not controlled by the mistakes of yesterday. His grace opens new paths, new growth, and new opportunities to walk with Him.

Yesterday is not your ending.

Reflection

Are there parts of your past that still try to define how you see yourself today?

What might change if you believed that God is still leading you forward beyond yesterday?

Extended Insight

Philippians 3 reveals Paul’s perspective on spiritual growth and purpose. Instead of living under the weight of his past accomplishments or failures, Paul focused on the ongoing work of God in his life.

The phrase “press toward the mark” describes intentional forward movement. The Christian life is not meant to be lived by constantly looking backward. It is a journey that moves toward the calling and purpose God continues to unfold.

This perspective frees believers from being trapped by previous chapters of their story. While the past may shape our understanding, it does not control the future God is preparing.

The grace of God allows the believer to move forward with hope.

Prayer

Father, there are times when memories from yesterday try to shape how I see my future. My past mistakes and regrets sometimes feel heavier than the hope ahead of me.

Thank You for reminding me that yesterday is not the end of my story. You are still leading me forward into the life You have prepared.

Help me release the weight of the past and reach toward the purpose You have placed ahead of me. Give me the courage to keep moving forward with trust in Your grace.

I choose to follow where You lead today.

Amen.
