You Belong in God’s Presence

Scripture
Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Devotion

A lot of people feel comfortable around God only when life is going well. When things are messy, when mistakes happen, or when faith feels shaky, many people quietly pull away because they assume they no longer belong near Him. They begin to think they need to fix themselves first before coming back into God’s presence. But this verse invites us to do the opposite. It says to come boldly to the throne of grace. Not cautiously. Not after we have everything figured out. Boldly. That invitation changes how belonging works in the kingdom of God. Belonging with God is not based on having a perfect life. It is based on grace. Grace means you can approach God even when you feel weak, confused, or uncertain. Instead of pushing you away when you struggle, God invites you closer. His presence is not a place where you must prove you deserve to be there. It is a place where mercy meets you exactly where you are.

Reflection

When I struggle or make mistakes, do I tend to move closer to God or pull away from Him? What might change in my life if I believed I could approach God with confidence even in difficult seasons?

Extended Insight

The book of Hebrews emphasizes the role of Jesus as the mediator who makes access to God possible. In the Old Testament system, access to the most sacred part of the temple was limited and carefully controlled. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and even then only once a year. That structure reinforced the idea that God’s presence was distant and difficult to approach. Hebrews explains that through Christ this barrier has been removed. Believers are now invited to approach God directly. The phrase throne of grace is important because it describes God’s authority joined with His mercy. A throne represents power and rule, but grace means that His power is exercised with compassion. This invitation to approach boldly does not mean arrogance. It means confidence rooted in the work of Christ. Belonging with God is not fragile or easily revoked. It is grounded in the relationship He has established through grace.

Prayer

Father, thank You for inviting me into Your presence. Help me understand that I do not have to hide from You when life feels difficult or when I feel unworthy. Teach me to come to You with honesty and confidence, trusting that Your grace is always available. Let my heart grow secure in the truth that I belong in Your presence. Amen.
