Ezekiel 9 opens with a loud cry declaring that those appointed over the city should draw near, each with a destroying weapon in hand. This immediately reveals that judgment is no longer only being announced but is now moving into execution. The appearance of six men coming from the direction of the higher gate facing north reveals organized and purposeful action, showing that what is about to occur proceeds under divine authority rather than chaos.

Among them is one clothed in linen with a writer’s inkhorn by his side. The linen garment distinguishes him from the others, revealing a different function connected not to destruction but to marking and recording. The men stand beside the brazen altar, placing the scene within the context of the temple and worship, showing that the judgment is directly connected to the spiritual corruption previously revealed.

The glory of the God of Israel rises from the cherub where it had been and moves toward the threshold of the house. This movement is significant because it reveals a transition in God’s relationship to the sanctuary. The glory has not fully departed yet, but it is moving, showing separation beginning because of the corruption within the temple.

God calls to the man clothed in linen and commands him to go through the midst of Jerusalem and set a mark upon the foreheads of those who sigh and cry over the abominations committed within the city. This reveals divine distinction between different heart conditions within the same environment. The mark is not based upon outward status, position, or power, but upon inward response to sin and corruption.
