Joshua 15 Inheritance, Boundaries, and the Responsibility to Possess
Study Content
Joshua 15 continues the distribution of the land, focusing specifically on the inheritance given to the tribe of Judah. The chapter outlines in detail the boundaries of their territory, extending from the southern wilderness to the northern regions, and lists the cities within those boundaries. This level of detail emphasizes that what God assigns is not vague or undefined. It is specific, measured, and intentional.
Within this broader allotment, the account returns to Caleb, whose inheritance had been established in the previous chapter. Caleb moves forward to take possession of Hebron by driving out the sons of Anak. This action demonstrates that receiving a promise is not the same as fully possessing it. Caleb had been given the land, but he still had to act in faith to remove what stood in the way. His willingness to confront the very opposition that once caused fear among others reinforces his continued strength and trust in God.
Caleb then sets his attention on Kiriathsepher, offering his daughter Achsah in marriage to whoever successfully takes the city. Othniel responds to this challenge and captures it, receiving Achsah as his wife. This moment reveals a continuation of faith through action, not only in Caleb but also in the next generation. The inheritance is not static. It invites participation and requires engagement.
Achsah herself then approaches Caleb with a request. She asks for a blessing and specifically requests springs of water in addition to the land she has been given. Caleb grants her both the upper and lower springs. This interaction highlights an important aspect of inheritance. What is given can be stewarded and expanded through wise request. Achsah recognizes that the land alone is not sufficient without provision, and she asks accordingly. Her request is received and honored.
As the chapter continues, it lists the cities that belong to Judah, grouping them according to regions. This extensive listing reinforces the scope of what has been given. It is not a small or insignificant portion. It is broad and varied, containing multiple areas that require attention and stewardship.
However, the chapter concludes with an important detail. The children of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem, and they remained there among them. This statement stands in contrast to the earlier victories. It reveals that even within the assigned inheritance, there are areas that remain unpossessed.
This is a critical point. The land was given, but not fully taken. The presence of the Jebusites indicates that partial obedience or incomplete action can leave room for what was meant to be removed. This does not negate the inheritance, but it affects the experience of it. What is left unaddressed continues to exist within what has been given.
From a deeper perspective, Joshua 15 reveals that God’s promises are specific and intentional, that inheritance requires active participation to be fully realized, and that leaving areas unaddressed can result in incomplete possession. The chapter shows clearly that what has been given must be engaged with in order to be fully experienced.
This chapter reads the reader by asking whether what God has given is being fully pursued, whether there are areas that have been left unaddressed, and whether there is a willingness to take responsibility for what has been assigned. It brings into focus that inheritance is not only about receiving, but about possessing and stewarding what has been given.
Reflection
Am I actively pursuing what God has placed in my life, or have I left areas unaddressed that require action. Have I fully stepped into what He has given, or am I only partially possessing it.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the inheritance You have given and for the specific ways You have called me to walk. Help me to fully step into what You have placed before me and to not leave areas unaddressed that require obedience.
Give me the courage to confront what stands in the way and the wisdom to steward what You have given. Teach me to seek You for what is needed and to walk in full alignment with Your will. Let my life reflect faithfulness in both receiving and possessing what You have promised. In Jesus name, Amen.
