Ephesians 3 Strengthened with Might in the Inner Man
Study Content
In Ephesians chapter 3, Paul pauses in the middle of his teaching to pray for the believers. His prayer reveals something important about spiritual growth. Instead of praying first for changes in circumstances, Paul prays that God would strengthen them in their inner man through the Spirit.
This request shows where true spiritual strength begins. The inner man refers to the deepest part of the believer’s life, the heart and spirit where faith, trust, and devotion to God reside. While outward strength may fluctuate depending on circumstances, the Spirit of God works within the believer to build an inner strength that remains steady.
Paul explains that this strength comes according to the riches of God’s glory. This means that the strength available to the believer is not limited by human ability or resources. It flows from the unlimited power and generosity of God Himself.
As the Spirit strengthens the inner man, several things begin to take place in the life of the believer. Faith becomes more stable. The believer becomes rooted and grounded in love. The ability to understand the depth of Christ’s love begins to grow. Over time the believer develops a deeper spiritual maturity that is not easily shaken by external pressures.
This inner strengthening is essential because life will inevitably bring challenges, uncertainty, and moments of weakness. When outward strength fades, the strength provided by the Spirit sustains the believer. The heart becomes anchored in God rather than controlled by changing circumstances.
Paul’s prayer reminds believers that spiritual growth is not something achieved through personal determination alone. It is the result of the Spirit of God actively working within the believer. As the Spirit strengthens the inner man, the believer becomes able to walk faithfully through every season of life.
Prayer
Father, strengthen my inner life through Your Spirit. When I feel weak or uncertain, remind me that Your power is working within me. Root my heart deeply in Your love and give me the spiritual strength to walk faithfully through every season of life. Let Your Spirit continue to build my faith and sustain my heart each day. Amen.
