When Fear Makes You Feel Small
Scripture
Psalm 56:3 " Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in you."
Devotion
Fear has a way of shrinking your perspective.
A challenge that once seemed manageable suddenly feels overwhelming. A situation that once looked possible now feels impossible. Fear whispers that you are not strong enough, not capable enough, and not prepared enough for what lies ahead.
It makes you feel small.
But Scripture reminds us of a simple response when fear shows up: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”
Notice what the psalmist does not say. He does not say, “If I am afraid.” He says, “When I am afraid.”
Fear is something every person experiences at times. Even people with deep faith feel moments of uncertainty and hesitation. The difference is not whether fear appears. The difference is what you do when it does.
Instead of letting fear define the situation, the psalmist turns his attention toward God.
Fear may try to make you feel small, but trusting God reminds you that your strength was never meant to come from yourself alone.
God’s presence enlarges your perspective. What once felt overwhelming becomes manageable when you remember who stands beside you.
Reflection
What situation in your life has been making you feel small or uncertain lately? How might your perspective change if you focused more on God’s strength than your own limitations?
Extended Insight
Fear often exaggerates our weaknesses while ignoring God’s power.
Throughout Scripture, God regularly called ordinary people into situations that felt far beyond their abilities. Gideon believed he was the weakest in his family. Moses believed he was not capable of speaking. Jeremiah believed he was too young.
Yet God continually reminded them of the same truth: His presence would go with them.
Faith does not grow because we suddenly become fearless. Faith grows when we learn to place our trust in God even while fear is present.
The moment we shift our focus from our limitations to God’s faithfulness, fear begins to lose its grip.
God has never required perfection from those He calls. He simply asks for trust.
And trust transforms the way we face what once felt impossible.
Prayer
Father, when fear tries to make me feel small and incapable, remind me that my strength comes from You. Help me place my trust in Your presence rather than my own abilities. Give me courage to move forward, knowing that You are with me in every situation I face. Amen.
