Adopted, Not Orphaned

Scripture
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 (KJV)

Devotion

One of the most powerful truths in Romans 8 is that believers are not merely followers of God from a distance. We are adopted into His family. Before knowing Christ, many people live with a quiet sense of spiritual distance, as though God is far away and difficult to approach. But adoption changes that relationship completely. Through Christ, we are welcomed into a relationship where we can approach God as a loving Father. The word “Abba” expresses deep closeness and trust. It reminds us that our relationship with God is not built on fear or obligation, but on belonging. When you truly understand that you are adopted into God’s family, your perspective begins to change. You stop living like someone trying to earn approval and begin living like someone who already belongs.

Reflection

Do you approach God with the confidence of a child who belongs, or do you still feel as though you must earn His acceptance?

Extended Insight

Adoption carries both identity and security. In the ancient world, an adopted child received the full rights and privileges of a natural-born heir. This meant their place in the family was permanent and protected. Paul uses this image to help believers understand the depth of their relationship with God. When you accept Christ, you are not entering a temporary arrangement with God. You are brought into His family with full belonging. This truth frees you from the fear of constantly measuring up. Instead, your relationship with God becomes rooted in love, trust, and ongoing transformation.

Prayer

Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your family. Help me understand more deeply what it means to belong to You. Remove any fear that keeps me from approaching You with confidence and trust. Teach me to live each day knowing that I am Your child, loved and secure in Your presence. Amen.
