Do You Know Him, or Just Know About Him?

Scripture
“And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:23 KJV

Devotion

There is an important difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him. Many people can speak about Scripture, attend church, or be familiar with the language of faith. They may understand religious ideas and even agree with them. Yet Jesus spoke of a moment when some would stand before Him believing they belonged to Him, only to hear the words, “I never knew you.” The issue Jesus raised was not information but relationship. Knowing about someone means being aware of facts. Knowing someone means there is a real connection. The heart of the Christian life is not simply learning religious truth. It is entering into relationship with the living Christ. It is walking with Him, listening to His voice, and allowing His presence to shape your life. This question invites honest reflection. Do I only know the ideas about Jesus, or do I truly know Him? The good news is that Jesus does not hide Himself from those who seek Him. He invites people into real fellowship with Him. A life that knows Christ personally is a life that walks in intimacy, not just information.

Reflection

When you think about your faith, does it feel like a relationship with Christ or mainly knowledge about Him? What practices help you cultivate a deeper relationship with Him?

Extended Insight

In Matthew 7, Jesus concluded the Sermon on the Mount by challenging listeners to examine the authenticity of their faith. Some people would claim religious activity and outward works, yet Jesus emphasized that the true issue was whether He knew them. The language of “knowing” reflects relational intimacy rather than mere awareness. Throughout Scripture, knowing God is described as a personal relationship marked by trust, obedience, and fellowship. True faith is not simply agreement with religious truth but a life lived in relationship with Christ.

Prayer

Father, I do not want to only know about You. I want to truly know You. Draw my heart closer to You and teach me to walk with You in genuine relationship. Help my faith move beyond knowledge into real fellowship with Christ each day. Amen.
