Formed Before Chosen

Scripture
Luke 6:12–13
“And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve…”

Acts 6:3
“Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom…”

Devotion

Luke 6 reveals something we often overlook.

Before Jesus chose the twelve, He prayed all night.

He did not select leaders impulsively.

He did not choose based on charisma.

He withdrew.

Selection followed communion.

Acts 6 shows the early church facing growth tension.

Widows were being neglected.

Complaints were rising.

Structure was required.

And what were the qualifications?

Not popularity.

Not platform.

Honest report.

Full of the Holy Ghost.

Wisdom.

Luke 6 reveals prayer before appointment.

Acts 6 reveals character before responsibility.

God does not build His church on talent alone.

He builds it on formed people.

Before you are positioned, you are prepared.

Before you are recognized, you are refined.

Reflection

Are you asking God for position before allowing Him to form your character?

Where might He be shaping you in hidden prayer before public responsibility?

Extended Insight

Jesus spent the night with the Father before naming the twelve.

The church sought Spirit-filled integrity before assigning the seven.

Both moments reveal the same pattern:

Formation precedes function.

We often desire calling clarity.

He desires character stability.

Luke 6 also contains the Sermon on the Plain.

Bless those who curse you.

Love your enemies.

Give expecting nothing in return.

These teachings are not theoretical.

They are leadership prerequisites.

Acts 6 shows what happens when formed people step into service.

Growth stabilizes.

Division quiets.

The Word continues to increase.

God does not rush structure.

He strengthens foundations.

Prayer

Lord,

Form me before You position me.

Shape my heart before You expand my reach.

Let integrity anchor me.

Let prayer guide me.

I do not want assignment without alignment.

I do not want recognition without refinement.

Build in me what can sustain what You are preparing to release.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
