God Was There All Along
Scripture
“And he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.” Luke 24:25 KJV
Devotion
Sometimes we walk through a season believing God is distant.
Prayers seem unanswered. Circumstances remain difficult. The heart wonders if God has stepped back or if something in our faith has failed. In those moments, it can feel as if we are walking through life alone.
But there is a story in Scripture that reveals a different reality.
After the resurrection, two disciples were walking on the road to Emmaus. They were confused and discouraged. Everything they believed about Jesus seemed to have collapsed. Their hopes felt shattered.
What they did not realize was that Jesus Himself was walking beside them.
They talked with Him. They listened as He explained the Scriptures. Yet they did not recognize who He was until later.
Only after the moment passed did they understand something remarkable.
God had been with them the entire time.
This story reveals a truth many believers experience. Sometimes God is closest when we feel the most uncertain. His presence does not disappear simply because we cannot immediately recognize it.
There are seasons where faith walks before understanding.
Later, when we look back, we begin to see how God was guiding, sustaining, and walking with us even when we thought we were alone.
God is often nearer than we realize.
Reflection
Have you ever looked back on a difficult season and later realized that God was working in ways you did not see at the time?
How might remembering this help you trust His presence in your current situation?
Extended Insight
The road to Emmaus in Luke 24 illustrates the difference between God’s presence and human perception. The disciples were grieving and confused after the crucifixion. Their expectations had been shaken, and their hearts struggled to understand what had happened.
Yet Jesus was walking beside them.
Their inability to recognize Him was not because He was absent. It was because their understanding had not yet caught up with what God was doing.
This moment reveals an important spiritual reality.
God’s presence does not depend on our awareness of it. Even when circumstances feel confusing, the Lord remains involved in the unfolding story.
Faith often learns to see God more clearly when we look back and recognize how He carried us through.
Prayer
Father, thank You that Your presence never leaves me.
When I feel uncertain or alone, help me remember that You are still walking beside me. Open my heart to recognize Your guidance and care in every season of my life.
Strengthen my faith so that I trust Your presence even when I cannot immediately see what You are doing.
Amen.
