God Was Writing Even in the Hard Seasons
Scripture
“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.” Psalm 119:67 KJV
Devotion
Some seasons of life feel like interruptions.
They are the chapters we would never choose. Seasons of loss, confusion, waiting, or struggle can make it feel like life has taken a turn away from where it was supposed to go.
In those moments it can seem like the story has stopped.
But God does not stop writing when life becomes difficult.
Psalm 119 reveals a perspective that often comes only after the season has passed. The writer reflects on a time of affliction and realizes that something meaningful happened within that difficult chapter. What once felt painful later became a place where the heart grew closer to God.
The hard seasons were not empty.
They were chapters where God was still shaping the story.
While we are living through those moments, it can be difficult to see what God is doing. Pain often narrows our vision to the immediate struggle. Yet God is able to work even in those places, forming deeper faith, wisdom, and compassion.
What feels like a setback may actually become a turning point.
What feels like a detour may become the place where the heart learns to trust God more deeply than before.
God does not step away from the story during hard seasons.
He continues writing.
Reflection
Is there a difficult season in your past where you later realized that God had been working in ways you did not see at the time?
How might trusting His presence help you face the challenges you are walking through right now?
Extended Insight
Psalm 119 contains repeated reflections on how God uses life’s experiences to draw people closer to Him. The writer acknowledges that hardship often becomes the place where deeper understanding of God’s word and character begins to grow.
This perspective appears throughout Scripture. Joseph’s years of hardship prepared him to lead during a time of famine. David’s wilderness seasons shaped him into a leader who trusted God deeply. Even the early church grew stronger through seasons of persecution.
God’s purposes are not limited to the easy chapters of life.
Sometimes the chapters that seem the most difficult become the very places where the meaning of the story becomes clearer later.
Prayer
Father, help me trust You even in the difficult seasons of life.
When I walk through moments that feel painful or confusing, remind me that You are still writing the story. Give me faith to believe that You are able to bring purpose and growth even from the hardest chapters.
Teach me to trust that Your work continues in every season of my life.
Amen.
