Keeping Your Lamp Burning

Scripture
“Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning.” Luke 12:35 KJV

Devotion

Jesus once described the life of faith as a lamp that must stay burning.

In the days when He spoke these words, lamps were fueled by oil. If the oil ran out, the flame would fade until the light disappeared completely. A lamp that was meant to shine would slowly grow dark.

Jesus used this picture to teach something important about spiritual life.

Faith must be tended.

A lamp stays burning when oil is continually supplied. In the same way, a heart stays spiritually alive when it continues to stay connected to God. Prayer keeps the flame alive. Scripture keeps the flame alive. Obedience keeps the flame alive. A life that continues turning toward God keeps the light burning.

When people drift away from those things, the flame begins to weaken.

Not all at once.

Slowly.

This is why Jesus said to keep your lights burning. He was calling His followers to live in a way that remains spiritually awake and connected to Him.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is closeness.

When the heart continues to walk with God, the lamp does not go out. The light of faith continues to shine, even through the long waiting seasons.

Reflection

What helps keep the lamp of your faith burning?

Are there practices in your life that help you stay connected to God each day?

Extended Insight

In Luke 12, Jesus encouraged His followers to remain ready for the moment when the Son of Man would return. The imagery of lamps burning represented spiritual alertness and readiness.

In ancient homes, lamps had to be maintained carefully. Oil needed to be replenished, and the wick needed attention. Without care, the light would eventually fade.

This imagery reminds believers that spiritual life requires attention and devotion. Faith grows stronger through consistent connection with God.

A lamp that continues receiving oil continues to burn.

Prayer

Father, help me keep the lamp of my faith burning.

Teach me to remain close to You through prayer, through Your Word, and through obedience. Guard my heart from drifting and help me stay spiritually awake.

May the light of my life continue to shine as I wait for the return of Christ.

Amen.
