The Journey Back to God

Scripture
“Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.”Zechariah 1:3 KJV

Devotion

There are seasons in life when the heart slowly drifts. It may not happen all at once. Sometimes it begins with distraction. Prayer becomes less frequent. Scripture becomes easier to set aside. Over time the closeness once felt with God begins to fade.

When people realize that distance has formed, they often wonder how to find their way back.

The good news is that the journey back to God does not begin with perfection. It begins with turning.

God spoke through the prophet Zechariah with a simple invitation. “Turn unto me.” The moment the heart turns toward God, something begins to change. God promises that He will respond to those who seek Him.

This means the journey back to God is not a lonely road. God is already moving toward the one who is turning toward Him.

No matter how long the distance has felt or how quiet faith may have become, the path back begins with a single step of the heart. When the heart turns, the relationship begins to restore.

Reflection

Have there been seasons when you felt your attention slowly drift away from God?

What might it look like for you to intentionally turn your heart back toward Him today?

Extended Insight

Throughout Scripture the idea of “turning” appears as a central theme in spiritual renewal. The biblical word often translated as repentance means to turn or return. It describes a change of direction rather than merely a feeling of regret.

God consistently invites His people to return to Him, not because He desires to shame them, but because He desires to restore relationship.

The promise in Zechariah reveals something profound about God’s character. When a person turns toward Him, God responds by drawing near. Restoration is not achieved by human effort alone. It unfolds within the relationship God actively restores.

The journey back to God is not about retracing every step of the past. It is about turning toward the One who is already reaching toward you.

Prayer

Father, there have been times when my attention drifted and my heart felt distant from You. I realize how easily life can pull my focus away from Your presence.

Today I choose to turn my heart toward You again. Thank You for the promise that when I turn to You, You respond with grace and closeness.

Help me walk this journey of returning with humility and trust. Restore the closeness that my heart longs for and guide me in Your truth.

I desire to walk near to You again.

Amen.
