The Lie That You Are Behind

Scripture
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 KJV

Devotion

One of the quiet lies many people carry is the belief that they are behind in life.

Behind in success.

Behind in purpose.

Behind in where they thought they would be by now.

This lie often grows through comparison. You see where others seem to be and begin measuring your life against their progress. The result is a heavy feeling that you somehow missed your moment or took too long to get where you are supposed to be.

But God does not measure life by human timelines.

Scripture never teaches that God rushes His work. Instead, it reveals a God who strengthens those who wait upon Him. Waiting is not falling behind. Waiting is often where God renews the heart and prepares the next step.

Many of the people God used most in Scripture walked through long seasons that appeared slow or uncertain. Yet those seasons were not wasted. They were preparation.

God’s work in a person’s life is not built on comparison.

It is built on purpose.

The lie says you are behind.

But the truth is that God is still leading your story forward. Every step, every lesson, and every season becomes part of the journey He is shaping in your life.

Reflection

Have you ever felt like you were behind compared to others around you?

How might your perspective change if you trusted that God is guiding your life according to His timing rather than human timelines?

Extended Insight

Isaiah 40 reminds believers that strength is renewed through waiting on the Lord. Waiting in Scripture is not passive inactivity. It is a posture of trust that allows God to work within the heart and the circumstances of life.

Human culture often values speed and visible progress. God, however, often works through slower processes that develop endurance, humility, and deeper faith.

Many biblical figures experienced long seasons before stepping into the purpose God had for them. What looked like delay was often preparation.

Understanding this truth helps believers reject the lie that they are behind and instead trust that God is still guiding their journey.

Prayer

Father, help me reject the lie that I am behind.

Teach me to trust Your timing and believe that You are still guiding my life. When comparison tries to discourage me, remind me that my story is in Your hands.

Renew my strength as I wait on You and help me walk forward with confidence in the path You are leading.

Amen.
