The Midnight Cry

Scripture
“And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.” Matthew 25:6 KJV

Devotion

In the parable of the ten virgins, the night had grown quiet.

The waiting had taken longer than expected. The lamps were dim, the hour was late, and the world had settled into sleep. Then suddenly, in the middle of the night, a cry rang out.

“The bridegroom cometh.”

In an instant, everything changed.

The moment that had been anticipated finally arrived. Those who were ready rose quickly, their lamps burning, prepared to meet the bridegroom. But those who had not prepared found themselves scrambling in the darkness.

Jesus used this moment in the story to reveal an important truth.

His return will come suddenly.

The midnight cry represents the moment when the waiting is over and the King arrives. It will interrupt ordinary life. It will awaken those who are watching and reveal who is truly ready.

But the message of the parable is not meant to frighten the faithful.

It is meant to awaken the heart.

The cry that announces the bridegroom will be a moment of joy for those who have been walking with Him. The long night of waiting will end, and the celebration will begin.

The question is not whether the cry will come.

The question is whether the lamp will still be burning when it does.

Reflection

If the midnight cry came today, would your heart be ready to meet Christ?

What helps keep your spiritual life prepared during seasons of waiting?

Extended Insight

The imagery of the midnight cry in Matthew 25 reflects the unpredictability of the bridegroom’s arrival in ancient wedding customs. The waiting party did not know the exact moment he would come, so they needed to remain prepared.

Jesus used this imagery to emphasize spiritual readiness.

The delay between Christ’s first coming and His return can tempt people to grow complacent. Yet the parable reminds believers that the moment will eventually arrive.

The midnight cry represents the sudden announcement that the waiting is over.

Those who have remained prepared will rise with joy to meet the Bridegroom.

Prayer

Father, help me live with a heart that remains ready for the return of Christ.

Keep the lamp of my faith burning and my life close to You. Guard me from becoming spiritually distracted during the waiting.

May my heart be prepared when the cry announces that the Bridegroom has come.

Amen.
