The Oil That Cannot Be Borrowed

Scripture
“And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.” Matthew 25:8–9 KJV

Devotion

In the parable of the ten virgins, all ten had lamps.

All ten were waiting for the bridegroom. From the outside, they looked the same. But when the moment arrived, something became clear.

Five had oil.

Five did not.

When the foolish virgins realized their lamps were going out, they turned to the wise and asked for oil. They hoped someone else could supply what they lacked. But the answer was something they did not expect.

The oil could not be borrowed.

Jesus used this picture to reveal something important about spiritual life. A relationship with God cannot be borrowed from someone else. No one can live on another person’s faith.

Not a parent’s faith.

Not a pastor’s faith.

Not a church community’s faith.

Each person must know God personally.

The oil in the lamp represents the inner life with God that grows through prayer, obedience, trust, and daily fellowship. It is the quiet relationship built over time in the presence of God.

When the moment comes to meet the Bridegroom, the question will not be whether you stood near people who believed.

The question will be whether the oil was in your lamp.

Reflection

Is your faith something that belongs to you personally, or something you rely on others to maintain around you?

What helps keep your relationship with God real and active?

Extended Insight

The parable in Matthew 25 emphasizes personal spiritual preparation. While the virgins appeared similar on the outside, the difference between wisdom and foolishness was revealed by whether they had prepared oil for their lamps.

Oil in Scripture often symbolizes the presence and work of the Holy Spirit as well as the life of devotion that flows from a genuine relationship with God.

The inability to borrow oil illustrates a powerful spiritual truth. Faith cannot be transferred. Spiritual readiness cannot be inherited from others.

Each believer must cultivate their own relationship with God.

The wise were ready because their lamps contained oil.

Prayer

Father, help me build a real and living relationship with You.

Teach me not to rely on the faith of others but to seek You personally through prayer, through Your Word, and through obedience. Fill my life with the oil of Your presence.

Help my lamp remain burning as I wait for the return of Christ.

Amen.
