The Promise That He Is Coming
Scripture
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:1–3 KJV
Devotion
When Jesus spoke to His disciples about His departure, their hearts were troubled. They did not yet understand what was about to happen. In the middle of their uncertainty, Jesus gave them a promise that has carried hope for believers through every generation. He said, “I will come again.” His return was not spoken as a threat, but as a promise of reunion. Christ was not leaving them forever. He was preparing a place for them. The return of Christ is meant to fill the believer with hope. It reminds us that this world is not the final destination and that God has not forgotten His people. The struggles, injustices, and brokenness of this world will not have the final word. One day the King will return, and everything that belongs to Him will be restored. Because of this promise, believers live with expectation. The Christian life is not simply about enduring the present. It is about looking forward to the day when Christ gathers His people to Himself. The promise that He is coming again is meant to steady the heart, strengthen faith, and remind us that the story God is writing is moving toward a glorious conclusion.
Reflection
How does the promise of Christ’s return change the way you view the struggles and uncertainties of this present life?
Extended Insight
John 14 records some of Jesus’ final words to His disciples before His crucifixion. Rather than leaving them with fear, He gave them assurance. He spoke of preparing a place and promised that He would return to receive them to Himself. This promise became a central hope of the early church. Believers understood that the return of Christ would bring the fulfillment of God’s kingdom and the restoration of all things. The hope of His return encourages perseverance and fills the Christian life with expectation and joy.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the promise that Christ will come again. When life feels uncertain or difficult, remind my heart that this world is not the end of the story. Fill me with hope as I wait for the day when Jesus returns and gathers His people to Himself. Help me live each day with joyful expectation of that promise. Amen.
