The Question God Is Asking You

Scripture
“And he said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”Mark 9:23–24 KJV

Devotion

Sometimes we spend a great deal of time asking God questions. We ask Him why something happened, how a situation will change, or when an answer will finally arrive. These questions are part of the honest relationship between a believer and God.

Yet there are moments when the conversation quietly turns.

Instead of us asking God questions, God begins asking questions of us.

In Mark chapter nine, a desperate father brought his son to Jesus hoping for healing. The situation was painful and complicated, and the father was unsure what would happen next. In the middle of the moment, Jesus responded with a question hidden inside a statement.

“If thou canst believe.”

The question was not meant to shame the father but to invite him into trust. The father’s answer was remarkably honest. He admitted both his belief and his struggle at the same time. “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”

This exchange reveals something powerful about how God works in the heart. Sometimes the most important moment in our journey is when we answer the question God is asking us.

Reflection

Is there an area of your life where you sense God quietly inviting you to trust Him more deeply?

What might your response look like if you answered that invitation honestly?

Extended Insight

Throughout Scripture, God often asks questions that lead people toward deeper faith. These questions are not asked because God lacks information. They are asked because they reveal what is happening inside the human heart.

When Jesus spoke to the father in Mark nine, He was drawing attention to the central issue of trust. The father did not respond with perfect confidence, yet his honesty opened the door for God’s power to work.

This moment reminds believers that faith does not require pretending to be strong. Faith grows when the heart brings its struggles honestly before God and asks for help.

Prayer

Father, I often come to You with many questions about my life and circumstances. Today I pause and ask You to show me the question You may be asking of my own heart.

If You are inviting me to trust You more deeply, help me respond honestly. Like the father in Scripture, I want to say, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”

Strengthen my faith and guide my heart into deeper trust in You.

Amen.
