The Relationship That Cannot Be Faked

Scripture
“And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:23 KJV

Devotion

There are many things in life that can be imitated.

Words can be repeated. Behaviors can be copied. Even spiritual language can be learned and spoken convincingly. From the outside, it can sometimes look like everything is in place.

But a real relationship cannot be faked.

Jesus spoke about this in a moment that surprised many people. He described a day when some would say they had done many things in His name. They would point to their actions, their works, and the things they had accomplished.

Yet Jesus said the issue was not what they had done.

The issue was whether He knew them.

True faith is not built on performance. It is built on relationship. It is not measured by how impressive a person’s outward actions appear. It grows from a heart that truly walks with Christ.

A real relationship with God changes the inner life.

It shapes the way a person thinks, speaks, and lives. It draws the heart toward obedience, humility, and love for God. That kind of relationship cannot be manufactured for appearances.

It is something real.

And when Christ returns, the thing that will matter most is not what a person claimed, but whether they truly knew Him.

Reflection

Is your relationship with God something that grows from a genuine connection with Him?

What helps you cultivate a real and honest relationship with Christ?

Extended Insight

In Matthew 7, Jesus concluded the Sermon on the Mount with several warnings about outward appearances in spiritual life. Some people would claim impressive works done in His name, yet Jesus pointed beyond those works to the deeper issue of relationship.

The phrase “I never knew you” reveals the importance of personal connection with Christ. Biblical faith is not merely intellectual agreement or outward activity. It is a living relationship with the Son of God.

Throughout Scripture, knowing God is described as an intimate and personal connection. This relationship grows through prayer, obedience, trust, and continual fellowship with Him.

A genuine relationship with Christ cannot be imitated.

It is known by Him.

Prayer

Father, help my relationship with You be real and sincere.

Guard my heart from focusing on outward appearances instead of genuine devotion. Teach me to walk closely with You and grow in my relationship with Christ.

May my life reflect a faith that is real and known by You.

Amen.
